Roofing materials & planning permission?

Hi Folks,
This is a 2 part query really. We're renovating a house and were granted planning permission for the work which included changing a flat roof to a pitched roof. Our architect advised us to use cement tiles, so we've been going to builders with that as a recommendation, only we had planning for roofing materials to match our existing roof (which was asbestos slate mix). Planning have advised us we can seek an amendment to the permission but that will take 2-4 weeks.
Thing is, every house on our street and the surrounding area has slate, so I'm thinking it is unlikely that they will agree to the amendment.
Anyone been the first in their street to use a new roofing material? Or had similar problems? Or know what I can get some good slate style roofing material that doesn't cost the earth?
Thanks,
BatCat

Capco on the boucher road carry quite a number of lines, eg 'fake' slate. I used it a couple of years ago and it was good value then, and with the building product sales decreasing over the past couple of years they may be competitive for a quote.
It is on the 'link' road between the road B&Q is on and the road the MOT centre is.0
