Hi I read an old post but thought i'd try to get more up to date info if possible.
My son who is 18 and a student was attacked last week and had 4 teeth knocked out. 1 upper and 3 lower. We are waiting to hear from the dentist about what can be done. We have to wait 2 weeks, so another week yet.
I want to do the best I can for him. I don't want this to have a lasting effect on his life. So I want to get implants and or caps, basically the best he can get.
The trouble is I'm not rich and some of the prices I see for treatment look way beyond my means. Because of this I have done some research on Dental Treatment abroad, which seems to be much cheaper.
I'm hoping I may get some recomendations from people on here who have been there and done it.
Thanks

Be warned you may NEED to be rich if treatment abroad goes wrong. There are certainly cases whereby people spend double having treatment done abroad and then corrected ... compared to just getting it done here. Have you looked in to the criminal injuries compensation? That could cover a big chunk. My friend was assaulted in 1997 and got 5K which would easily cover the cost of certainly one implant and crown and would go a long way in helping with more extensive work. Also many people would offer payment plans. Going abroad sounds great but should you have a problem few if any dentists here would touch you with a barge pole as they would not want to interfere with such treatment plans .. and would probably not feel competent anyway. Someone I know had 3 implants and a bridge done and the practice was 40 minutes away. She had a temporary bridge on while the implants were healing for 3 months. In that time the temporary came off or broke 8 times. Would you fancy making repeat trips out to wherever you go? I certainly wouldnt be comfortable in dealing with such problems as I am not skilled enough. If care was to be sought here it would more than lilely need to be with a practitioner that does them themselves and they would charge to repair privately seeing as it wasnt their work in there. What I am trying to say is that the cost may LOOK less .... but it may in reality not be0

On the positive side, I know a couple who went on a dental holiday -
2 years ago. The wife had a complete set of implants, the husband about 13 I think. I was very dubious about it but they were very pleased and still are. There are implants that can be put in immediately without the waiting for them to bond with the bone.
You need to do a lot of research.0 -
With the pound where it is at the moment, the savings to be made by going abroad really aren't as big as they were a couple of years ago anyway.
So add in the hassle factor of any problems, and it's not really a starter anymore.
If you're not able to afford what you ultimately want at the moment, then go for treatments that still give you options later on when you're better placed to afford things.
Things like dentures and Maryland Bridges aren't as 'fashionable' as implants, but they don't do much damage either - leaving the door still open for implants later on.
There will be many options for his treatment. It would be better to find a dentist who can spend time talking you through them all, and going for what you can afford now, with an eye to improving things later. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
If he was attacked is there any reason why he cant claim compensation from the Criminal Injuries Board to pay for his dental treatment.
Im sure i saw a thread last week regarding something similar.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
If you check on the general dental councils website (sorry I am unable to post links) they have a guide for the general public who want to have dental treatment abroad.
The guide is very useful and explains everything you need to know if you do decide to go down this route.

There is a great "quality/price ratio" at this clinic: Dent IQ. Slovenia is a really good developed country which we all miss, but alot of people goes there from UK to live!0

Hmm Ozza seems to be spamming a few boards on here for this dental practice.(and clearly he isnt a native UK resident although trying to give the impression he is)0

I don't know if this helps much but here on the Isle of Man the vast majority of dentists are Manx NHS but also take private from the adjacent isle (UK) and there are some very good ones, why not look in the IoM online phone book for a few, not as cheap as some overseas ones but standards are kept under strict government controls.Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! Oh I dunno.
I've just had a £12k + 'estimate' from my regular uk dentist for just the upper teeth, denture on implants, yet in Budapest it's about £4k.
Seems as if i'll be able to afford a taxi back there if there's any problems?
I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful and that you post in defence of the uk dentist industry but on some points your reasons don't hold up.

Mark feel free to go out there but if you have problems that require regular reviews or remedial replacement work I wouldnt be too surprised if you end up taking repeated trips back out on a weekly/monthly basis. I also wouldnt expect many UK based practitioners to do a great deal of you are having problems if they didnt attempt the work in the first place. Practitioners with implant experience are not that many in reality and those without wouldnt touch problems with a barge pole. I know I wouldnt. ALso you dont know if you are being quoted like for like. By that I mean the treatment plans may not be the same. I know of patents that have received significantly different treatments than that suggested in the UK. They make the choice based on cost but not on quality which is what they SHOULD make their decision on IMO .... and I do not do any implants and have no commercial interest in them whatsoever. I am also a pretty much fully NHS practitioner so again have little external interest other than being concerned for patients well being. I have seen examples of going abroad or such work and really wouldnt do it myself and I dont think its worth the hassle. Its not like comparing IPAD prices in different countries!0
