Got up this morning to find I needed to go and get cat food if I wanted to avoid a mutiny tomorrow morning. Went and caught bus, but I remembered I would be going past a rather nice garden centre (not one of those flogging plastic chairs and ride on mowers, one that actually sells UK grown plants).
Tried arguing with myself (silently, I'm not MAD, you know!) that I should do the responsible thing, I always grow tomatoes and salad and strawberries and beans and herbs on my balcony. But just this once, I did what I really wanted.
The tomato tub is now home to a rose bush. The bean tub has a lavender in it and the hanging basket is sporting some tumbling sweet peas.
Once the daffs and tulips are done in the window boxes, I will be putting in geraniums.
I might will still do a few herbs and maybe some lettuce, but I am keeping my one little patch of peace for decoration and perfume only!
Other than that, I am currently relaxing after a Salade Niçoise and an entirely unnecessary glass of Waitrose Champers
whilst the cat snores on my feet.
Sometimes, I like Sundays.

I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

You are so right! I have been faffing around in the garden today with GYO stuff and getting fed up to the back teeth with all the ruddy pots everywhere that I am seriously contemplating giving up my efforts. As OH says... it is just a 'hobby' isn't it - we're not going to be self-sufficient - and I found myself wondering a) whether our little garden will ever look tidy again and b) will I ever get to sit and relax?
Entirely unnecessary champers??? I'm off to pour a pint of sherry and it's very necessary!!:A0 -
Surely the idea of money saving is to save money on essentials so we can splash out on the luxuries.
When I buy my own wine I always buy chablis because I enjoy it so I cut back on other things. My sister buys economy bread and then complains that it tastes vile, that IMO is NOT saving money.
Maybe you could get the cat a job delivering leaflets to pay for your treats?
Next time you splash out remember a box of chocolates though, I will have a coffee cream please.0 -
[chucks over the coffee creams - yuk] Here you go! Anyone want the orange creams?
I'm thinking of selling the cat fluff as exclusive birdie bedding - if wild birds could pay, we'd be squillionaires this month!I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

for me money saving is a way of making me fully appreciate my non essential purchases

what i eat and how much food i buy seems to be my biggest lifestyle change - aiming to be more healthy an waste less food but half term and too many kids to watch has thrown me out of it a bit lol0 -
Sigh...I just found some mushrooms with a use-me-or-lose me look about them. So I fried them in some olive oil while I bagged up for the freezer the soup I made yesterday.
And my reward is...my teenager has beaten me, after a hard day in the garden, to the bath. Where she will stay for ages and use all the hot water.
Got any spare champagne??

I love my garden and I am growing lots of veg in pots and tubs because I want to devote the beds to flowers and shrubs. I'm growing the veg to save money and for the pleasure of picking and cooking my own produce that I have raised from seed but I still want my garden to be beautiful, it's my haven from a mad and sometimes not so great world.
I think that you should do whatever gives you pleasure, so enjoy the champagne and your rose bush, lavender and sweet peas JoJo and yes, I sometimes like Sundays too

Sounds like you had a perfect day! We use our money saving ways to help us have treats we otherwise couldn't afford. I completely agree about the GYO taking lots of time and effort but for us it is worth it. However my patio area is strictly flowers and pretty things so we strive for a balance of both!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
