Can 'clicking' your toes give you arthritis?

Hi,

I am not asking for medical advice as such - i was just wondering if clicking your toes can lead to arthritis??
I have clicked my big toes for years and have had some pain in the right one (the one i click most) especially in winter, it goes really stiff.
I wear flip flops most of the year even in winter as if i wear shoes the pain is worse - unless they are really soft (also have hardly any arch in my feet.)
The past couple of weeks the pain has been constant and the aching is going up part of my foot too.
Anyways i am going to see the docs this week and didnt know weather to mention it as i'm only 22 (arthritis run in the family) plus i seem to practically live there at the moment.
Does anyone think its worth mentioning? or can anyone recommend any good arthritis sites? xx

Yes do mention it. The clicking itself will not have caused arthritis but I recognise many of your symptoms and you need to see an orthopaedic surgeon for some advice.

I could actually have written that post myself three years ago.

I've been clicking everything from my fingers, ancles, toes, wrists and knees for years (I'm 36) and I havn't had any arthritic problems at all. Might be that you stubbed it once and it never recovered or something like that.

    I don't mind saying.

I started off on anti-inflamatories painkillers but had side effects worse than the original pain so had to come off those. Blood tests and x-rays showed deterioration in the joint of my big toe and flat arches.

I had to wear orthotics for the arches which have worked brilliantly and I also had three months of physiotherapy. The pain under my feet has gone but the problem with my toe caused me to walk over on my foot and I am currently trying to retrain my foot back to straight using special shoes. If that fails I will have to have an operation on the toe joint. I have had a bone scan and guided steroid injections in my left foot which has resolved one of the areas of pain.

If I had seen my GP when the pain started before it got so bad I used to lie on the floor crying I would have got treatment before I did any further damage.

Now I have the shoes that rock on the bottom, I can walk further than before but I cannot wear flat shoes as that is still painful.

Gosh, i'm glad i posted now - i walk on the side of my foot slightly too,
I hope its nothing to serious - am feeling like i'm falling apart lately - have got carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand aswell
It's really getting to me coz DS in only 2 and i find it difficult to pick him up, and walking far kills my foot.
Thnx for the advice, will def get something sorted xx

  • OP, I'm a reflexologist, and you could have fallen arches, which causes pain.
