So basically, you are completing on a house that you don't have a mortgage on, you have already arranged a conversion but haven't looked into planning permission, you are about to lose your job and have not looked for another......

All I can say is Good Luck!
You do have rights......but you still need common sense.

Yes, you're right I should have thought of the mortgage but didn't! At least we can still go ahead without one and pay cash. Planning permission - no, I didn't know I could look into that before moving and as explained above I haven't ever moved before! Hopefully it will go through. As for my job, I have my reasons for not looking yet but don't wish to share.

Thanks for your good wishes anyway Angel.cake although I get the feeling you mean the complete opposite!

Your plans seem to have been to look at what you finally hope to achieve, without looking at any of the problems or solutions for arriving at your goal. No wonder so many people get into financial trouble.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    M,
All i can say is well done, to have saved up or worked hard for having the best part of £350k to buy a house outright, well done.
I've never been as lucky to be in a position like that before, and I can't class myself as any sort of expert on here, but if it's your dream house just now, but you want an extension put on then if you think it's for you and your mum, then it is, if its what you BOTH want, go for it, especially when you're in a position to do it for cash just now.
As for the extension, I'm in Scotland, and we can phoen the planning dept up and gove them the address, and ask them what the chances are for that area for approval, they'll be able to tell you at once what you're limitations are likely to be, or at least some guidelines, they may even tell you it's a conservation area and they wouldn't allow it, who knows.
Good luck and enjoy your weekend, have a glass of wine and think how much you can enjoy your wee bit of relaxation before chasing up these loose ends after the weekend.
You should read the bit about London and Country(?) the mortgage broker that Martin has dealings with, I think it's in the mortage pages, speak to them on the phone, tell them whats likely to happen and they search the whole of the market, and they may just be able to get it so you can get the dream house that you want, and the extension for mum.
    Good luck.
Thanks to all the competition posters.
  • Yes well done for getting in the position you are in.
It makes me laugh some of the RUDE people on here! when people are clearly here for advise. If she knew the answers she wouldnt be on this website!

The kind people are back, thank goodness for that! I was made to feel very stupid but believe it or not I am an intelligent 46 year old that is obviously very naive about house buying/selling etc! Thank you asharon, smitchy73 and 88charlotte88 for your understanding!

Just to let you know that I saw Mum today and we had a good chat about everything. First thing Monday we are cancelling the mortgage application, its not needed and most importantly we don't need the stress! Secondly, if the planning application is refused it doesn't matter, the house is perfect anyway and feels like home but I will make a phone call on Monday and test the water but if it looks like a no, so be it! Its big enough for us regardless, so again no stress is needed!

We lost my dad last year, so moving in together is our main priority - he would be proud that we have got this far, admittedly with a few mistakes but nothing of a drastic nature! All he would want is for us to be happy and I truly believe we will be!

Smitch73 - I did exactly as you advised! Went out with a friend and had a glass or 3 of wine, then we directed the taxi past "my" new home and shouted "see you soon". I can't wait to get in there.

Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed that completion date comes soon!

The full survey is always good to have done, buy the house outright, worry about coverting later when back in employment, it will be easy to get a job for what you want.
