Hello All,
We are buying our first mattress (king size). We were looking at the one in this link, as we have been sleeping in a similar mattress for two years! Any advice appreciated...

I bought a Rest assured pocket spring with latex top as I found memory foam a bit too warm.
I love my mattress so much I hate getting up in the morning.

Stay well away from Rest Assured, or any other member of the Silentnight group if you want you mattress to last.
If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.0 -
Thanks for the comments, ML and Tim.
Tim can you suggest some names of the categories you mentioned? as this is our first mattress we would try not to make a blunder! Your help is much appreciated. We are quite comfortable with the pocket spring types with memory foam...0 -
I too looked at this mattress. I know tesco direct have a similar one for £313.34 with a further £50 off using the code on their website. Not sure how that price compares.0

I'm not allowed to recommend anything, as it could be viewed as advertising. However as a good start follow what I said previously. And remember that atwo sided mattress will last far longer than a non turn one.0 -

The other mattress I liked (other than the Rest Assured) was a Mill brook.
My base is a Millbrook sprung edge and I've had it donkey's years, the pocket sprung mattress that was on it is now being slept on by my son, so I know for a fact that they have a good life span.

My most comfortable bed ever was a Millbrook too - but they are expensive.0

I exhausted all channels looking for a mattress without a 'brand' name, googled, traipsed round all shops within a 20 mile radius, looked for factory bed shops (in Yorkshire). Saw some rubbish big names and rubbish no names, tried to take Tim's advice, but I will not buy anything unless I've seen it first. I will buy off the internet but not unless I have seen the product first

You say you have found rubbish companies, but you didn't say which ones????
Many of the big manufacturers did have a good life span, but many have cut quality over recent years in order to cut production costs. However I would still go with Millbrook over Rest Assured any day.0 -
Not rubbish companies, rubbish mattresses. What I meant was some of them look impressive till you lie on them and they seem week at the edges (it's hard to explain).
As an example, Carpet Right has a bed department, they look ok (after all, they are half price!) but on closer inspection they are rubbish, and there's not a well known name in sight. But I'm not just singling out Carpet Right, if you trail round some of the small independent shops there is a similar story, sows ears dressed as silk purses.
I'm not saying buying on line is wrong, I'm saying I like to see what I'm buying before I part with my cash. I wouldn't buy a Sofa either without sitting on it first.

The trouble is that it's the well known brands that don't tend to be as good quality.
As for Carpetright, they are a big company, so probably get their mattresses made by a big manyfacturer, but to a low spec (as many of the other big chain stores do). Just looking at a couple of their prices they seem to be double what you should be paying.
As for mattresses being weak at the edges, are you refering to pocket sprung mattresses? The reason I ask is because in pocket sprung mattresses all the springs work independently, so if you sit on the edge, then you are only sitting on a few springs, and they will squash right down.
You can only get a very rough idea by laying on a bed for 10 mins in a shop. You really need to be able to sleep on a mattress to know for sure. This is why I suggested using an on line seller with a proper satisfaction guarantee, that allows you to unpack and sleep on the mattress. Then if you don't like it you can return it.
Have you actually contacted any of the independent manufacturers to see if you can go and try the beds out at the factory? Some will let you, but some won't.0
