Tax Coding Notice?

I've not had one for this year and with all the problems with the computer system and crazy tax codes I'm slightly worried. I only got last years because I had a mail redirect set up at my old address - you would think the tax man knows where you live from your employer? NI and all that?

Do you get a coding notice each year or am I just being paranoid? I've started imagining next months pay slip having super tax on it or something hehe

Since your employer only sends your details to the revenue at the end of a tax year when they do their end of year return or if you leave their employment then it is unlikely the revenue would know if you moved address.
It is up to you to tell them and not leave it up to you employer to do it for you.

If your circumstances have not changed, then you wont get a notice of coding. You could check with your payroll dept. that they havn't been sent one either.
It's up to you to inform HMRC if you have a change of address, not your employer.

Sorry fengirl ....... don't normally argue with your expertise ..... but that's not right.

The rationale of the bulk issue of P2s is a bit lost in the mists ...... but HMRC have long issued 15M plus of these just in the bulk issue normally selected in Jan. They used to outsource the printing / issuing for many years, but have been 'forced' to bring them back in-house after the debacle of the missing (DWP) data discs forced a cross-Whitehall review of data security.

I've not had one either for my main job, although I did have one for some job I left years ago. HMRC's new computer system decided I must still be working there as a second job.

I agree that if your circs havent changed in your main job, you might not get a coding notice. It would save a bunch of money to not send out a new codng notice when it hasn't changed.

I think that might depend on where you stand?

If on the outside looking in ...... then I would agree that the Jan bulk issue looks like a huge cost for relatively little gain. As well as the cost of printing / output handling .... there's a postal cost of at least £5M even excluding software Mailsort discounts.

But if on the inside looking out ..... then someone has clearly decided (it's been like this ever since PAYE was computerised) that it is beneficial to let most of the working populace know what the current state of their PA is, as viewed from the HMRC perspective. On the premise the upfront effort / cost is cheaper than handling a lot of downstream changes / complaints.

I do recollect someone not far from here who perpetually tells people to resolve coding issues in-year .... and not allow them to slide into closed years? Very sound advice ...... but far more difficult without the sort of up front information that most of us get from the bulk issue.

Mine (dated 30th Jan) was also extremely late this year. But did arrive sometime mid-March whilst I was up in the snowy regions of the Arctic. Surprisingly, after the early antics of the new PAYE system .... it is spot on.

Yes, I'm guilty of banging on about getting your code right during the year! But surely, if nothing has changed, all we can look for is that our employer is operating the same code from one year to the next. Or am I still in the dark days of the annual coding run when it was all done manually and the fewer coding notices you could issue the better?
