Mattress advice

Can anyone suggest a comfortable mattress single for under £150 max, I know you get what you pay for but in this instance am stretched right now and this is for spare room seldom used about 4-6 times a year for adults. it will go on a hideaway type bed, other mattress is pocket sprung and 18cm deep, what experience do people have of open coil or foam. thanks:j

You can get a good quality open coil sprung mattress for around £100 delivered.

I would go for open coil sprung rather than reflex foam, as the foam can be very hot and sweaty in summer, and won't have edge support.

thanks for your reply, was confused as on online retailers it says in the £100max price range that postureform is better value than open coil, will have a look at the open coil again, difficult to tell them apart as the john lewis one at £50 appears to have the same construction as most around £100, may take a chance on the John Lewis one. Heat is an issue as it is a loft room which can get very hot, do you know if you put a cotton cover on the foam if it gets less hot. would be interested in your opinion of the JL one as other people on here have reccommended it. this is to be used for 4 or 5 oddd weeks per year for adults of varying sizes, THANKS:A

I wouldn't go for the JL one, as it will be their very lowest budget one.

Although mattresses may appear to be the same construction as far as the fillings go, the main difference is the amount of fillings. If you look at a mattress and the top seems to be very flat, then the chances are that there are very few fillings, and you would be able to feel the springs. If the quilting makes the top of the mattress stand proud of the beading at the edge of the mattress, then the quilting is probably much deeper, and it will be a better quality mattress..

I'd just stay well clear of reflex foam only mattresses if heat is an issue.
