Car finance - dealer not paid instalment

I recently part-exd a car that had finance outstanding on it. The dealer has failed to pay the next instalment - even though he has promised to do so. The finance company are chasing me for the arrears, even though I no longer have the vehicle. Surely the dealer has some liability for paying off the finance - yet the finance co say I am ultimately responsible for paying the arrears (and the original loan). 
Where do I stand in all this?

If you part exchanged the vehicle the dealer has the responsibility to settle the finance in full on your behalf.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

All sorted now. Dealer has finally paid off balance - he had cash-flow issues & was waiting for funds to clear.0
