Cost of making home made jam

  • I only make jam from home grown fruit so it is quite cheap. Luckily I have the space to grow a lot so I have strawberries, rhubarb, gooseberries, logan berries, tayberries, quinces, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, pears etc. I also buy a massive, massive bag of sugar at the beginning of the season and this reduces the cost too.

Yeah - a girl in work brought me the apples from her tree, and i picked the blackberries so it couldn't have cost any less! it's dripping as we speak :)

Haven't been careful with the chillis and fingers, which are currently on fire.
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

we grow all our own fruit for jam have 20 different types and this year got sugar from farmfoods at 2 for £1.00 so it has been really cheap with chutney we have also used our own fruit vegtables and herbs so have had to buy vinigar
my family would not eat shop brought now even if it was cheaper
  • Just a note to anyone who can't get their jam to set like the stuff in the shops - It isn't supposed to :rotfl:

Proper home-made jam is the real thing. It should be thick and gloopy and fruity.

That was an 'aha' moment for me.
