What is the printed date on the form?
I would think it is now too late to do it on line for tax year 08/09 - I've just had my 09/10 form dated 06apr2010 !
I think you have 2 months but don't take my word for it.0 -

From: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/deadlines-penalties.htmThe deadline is only later than 31 January if you received the notice to file your tax return after 31 October.
You'll then have three months from the date you receive the notice to send your return online.
And from: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/news/sa-filing-earlieryrs.htmFrom 6 April 2009, Self Assessment customers and Agents can file Self Assessment Returns online for earlier tax years; using either HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) software or commercial software available from a list of approved providers.
The 2007-08 return is the first ‘earlier year’ return available online and customers will be able to file this return online during the 2009-10 tax year, and for several years after that.
The time limit for HMRC accepting an earlier year tax return is five years and ten months after the end of the tax year to which the return relates. So 31 January 2014 will be the last date on which a 2007-08 tax return will be accepted online.
Over time and as each new tax year begins the number of ‘earlier year’ returns that customers can file online will increase; although the oldest of these with remain 2007-08.
So you should be able to file a 2008-09 tax return online until 31 January 2015, but you will be charged a penalty if you don't file it within three months of receiving the notice.0 -
The printed date on the form is actually the 9th April 2010 tomorrow!
Yes I'm sure the 3 months from receipt, or 3 months from the above date, applies with regard to the potential fine, but why doesn't it say so on the form rather than the online deadline of 31 Jan 2010?0 -
I got a court summons like that; it was dated the previous Friday today was Thursday and it said I had 10 days in which to file a defence - I was sitting on the train to work before I opened it.
So on the next day I took a morning's holiday allowance to go to the court house - opening time 10:00 Hrs.
A bored clerk put down his copy of The Sun I had watched him reading and wandered over to the public counter at about 10:05.
By about 10:15 I had managed to find out that as far as the court was concerned the summons would be served on me the following Monday - at which time the 10 days would start.
For what it is worth my wonderful council had manfully ignored my two previous letters and were in the process of suing for 50 quid (now with an extra 70 quid legal charges added).
The payment had somehow been misposted to someone else's account.
Morons - The equivalent of the financial director was paid about 75 years of my council tax to go and get himself another job, some six months later.0 -
Well I've finally got all the tax statements ready, and motivated myself to do this, went on the HMRC website and registered.
However, am I right in believing there is now a 7 day wait for a Activation PIN code before I can use this? Wish I had known this before! I seem to have the hard copy forms, but cannot find the employment pages so am stuck with the online version.
Will they will require hard copies of documents? if so I could scan these in whilst I'm waiting.0 -
Yes - there's normally a wait for the activation details after the initial registration.
If you mean support documents such as interest certificates etc etc ...... you only supply those if asked for. Don't send them with the Return. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
You can download the employment (and other) pages from their website if you want to do a paper return.0
-
Well what a shower the on line tax people are!
I still haven't received my activation code within 12 days of registering. I contacted them two days ago about my concerns yet they are insistent they have sent it, and have been waiting on the phone for half an hour this morning before getting cut off. The Online help failed and wiped my 'comment', and the Email received an automated reply to call them up.
I will have to go through the whole procedure again, presumably when the month is up.
I'm tempted to do the paper version however, I assume the on line version carries out the calculations so you can see the result?0 -
The calculations are not that difficult, the paper "How to" guide you will have received usually has some guidance at the back on how to calculate your liability.0
