The damage is only about 2ft x 2ft at the most but I am finding the smell horrable. I will be getting the carpet replaced in about a month but could anyone tell me any tips in how to get rid off or mask the smell in the meantime ?

Sprinkle bicarb on, leave for a few hours then vacuum up, bicarb is normally quite good at neutralizing odours!!!

What is the carpet made of? If there's underlay, or the carpet is rubber backed, it could be rotting. If bicarb doesn't do it, and you're replacing it soon anyway, it might be worthwhile lifting it?

The carpet is manmade and there is underlay underneath but it seems to be the carpet which is stinking. Unfortunately the room is huge with lots of furniture so it would not be easy to lift, and it is also the most used room. I considered cutting it out but it would not be suitable either. As the way things go in this house I will end up sitting with a cut up carpet till xmas. !

can you borrow a carpet cleaning machine from someone,we hire one from a local dry cleaners £10.00 for half a day.We used to have a carpet cleaning business,if you use a machine that sprays water onto the carpet then sucks it up again this should get rid of the smell.
