Bed Mattress Advice

I need to replace king size mattress on a divan bed. Original mattress that came with bed is a King Koil Flexi Coil Spring System. Mattress is now 13 yrs old.

My husband and myself both have back problems. Husband is 6'3" and about 16 stone. Im about 9 stone. Checked out Dreams today and am wary of the big stores after reading other reviews. Was tempted though by their Tempest Adjustable Kingsize for £999 although mattress seemed very poor quality.

Is there a big difference between 2500 pocket springs and 1400. Its all very confusing. Want to be able to still use electric blanket. Live in Northern Ireland and most on line shops seem to deliver mattresses to NI. Any good mattress recommendations welcome?

As far as I know more springs = more support. Generally the higher the spring count the better. I was always told to get the best mattress you can afford, particularly if you have a bad back.

Sorry, can't recommend a particular one as I've got an Ikea one and its not that great really.

I bought a King Size memory foam mattress from Dreams last year. It is, without doubt, the best sleep I have ever had.

It's just one of the simple, all-memory foam ones - only cost £350 and has been an absolute bargain. It's a bit like sleeping on a firm marshmellow - if you like hard beds it won't suit. I wouldn't swap it for anything. It has made getting out of bed in the morning difficult - for all the right reasons :D

I use pocketed sprung because I also have a bad back and I never even thought about not being able to use an electric blanket - it's on every night as I get joint pains if I am cold and then I can't sleep. I haven't ever had any problems with the electric blanket on a pocketed sprung mattress so I wouldn't worry about that.

I got my mattresses from John Lewis in the sale - they sometimes have special purchases on pocketed sprung at really good prices and they were brilliant value. The first one lasted 15 years and the next one is now 6 years old and still like new.

A good pillow also makes a real difference. There is a shop near us selling mobility aids etc and I get pillows there which have an oval shaped depression stitched into the middle. It keeps your neck straight when you lie on your side. They are so comfortable if you have a sore neck and it helps to avoid trouble travelling down my back and triggering lower back problems
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

We've got a SilentNight PostureSpringing mattress on the bed which is really comfy and helps both of us, as we suffer from bad backs as well.

Not sure what they cost, as I was lucky enough to win the mattress and bed in a competition - which I was chuffed to bits about! You spend up to a third of your life in bed, so don't scrimp on a new mattress, otherwise it's false economy.

    Happy mattress hunting.

sorry to hijack the thread slightly, doesn't seem worth starting a new one.

has anyone purchased from bishopsbeds /bishops beds before?

the reason i ask is we purchased from them a little while ago but i'm getting the feeling it was a bad idea. they've said a courier will call me, but i'm yet to hear anything, and whenever i try and make contact bishops beds are not in a hurry to bother responding.

i'm now at a point where unless my order turns up soon i'm going to have to get a refund.

i don't notice any bad feedback on them when searching the net, but then i can always be a first!

My DD and son-in-law treated themselves to a memory mattress and said its the most comfortable sleep they have ever had. They too used to suffer from backache and said it was down to their clapped out mattress
( they do have five children by the way ;))
DD said it was worth every penny and wished they had bought one sooner

Another vote here for memory foam. Definately the most comfortable to sleep on. I have one that is all foam with memory foam on top, DD has one with springs and memory foam top. Both are extremely comfortable. Would recommend.
