How Long can creditors 'chase' you?

Hi all!

Does anyone know how long (from the original date of default) creditors can keep 'chasing' you for outstanding debts? Is there a legal time-frame???

Also, I'll be moving to the states in 2 months time to work for 2 years - so what do I do about my existing creditors that I still owe money to?

I currently live with my mum as I had been ill over the last several years and on "incapacity benefit" (which is how the bills and CC's fell into default and started to snowball in the first place) and I don't want her getting any hassle over *MY* unpaid bills.

I'm 'almost' back on my feet health wise - and I *want* to settle my debts (on my own terms and on what 'I' can afford).

I'd be *really* grateful for any help anyone can give me on these issues.

Sincerely,
Paul J.

PS: Thanks to everyone in advance (and thanks to Martin for creating this wonderful site & resource).

As far as I'm aware, they can chase you until the account is satisfied or settled. If you're moving away then you should contact your creditors & explain, perhaps with concrete proposals to pay otherwise letters & phone calls will still be sent to your Mum's house. If you feel unable to do this yourself, then perhaps contact CAB, CCCS or Payplan to work out a way forward.

have a look at this one: Payplan on Limitations Act 1980

Haven't read it through thoroughly, but looks like it could be what you are after

there is a limitation act that says if your creditors haven't been in contact for 6 years then they cannot enforce the debt...doesn't apply to 'crown debt or ccjs ' however

you can pay your creditors from the states via the banking system.

sadly unless you address the issues of the debts you owe, your mother will probably be hassled by your creditors as i assume hers is your last known address

if you want to settle your debts then contact your creditors and discuss your proposals for settlement. you may wish to run your ideas through this forum or you can receive free advice from payplay or cccs
