Tesco's "Value" goods

Being a savvy shopper I always check what I am paying for. I have noticed recently two things in Tesco. One is their "Value" range. Both their bananas and tomatoes are not value at all. The bananas are only a penny or two cheaper per kg and are much poorer in quality, and their tomatoes are actually more expensive per kg than their family pack of ordinary salad tomatoes.
I've also noticed with both teabags and Fruit Muesli that the smaller boxes are better value per kg/per teabag than the bigger boxes (which you might assume would be better).
Watch out!!!

I have just noticed that. Did you know that there is more air in a value loaf then there is in a loaf of Warburtons? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

No matter how cheap the "value" teabags may be, they make an utterly vile cup of tea! "Sweepings" as my grandmother always said!
The toilet rolls and tissues are not bad quality though. As always: buyer beware and check if you're really getting a bargain!0 -

Um... in an 800 gram loaf of bread there is surely... er... 800 grams of bread, no matter who makes it? The air doesn't weigh anything...
As for the fact that value bread tastes and looks unappetising, well...

Those Tesco Value jeans are marvellous. I've been running a pair in now for three weeks and they haven't stretched or gone baggy around my !!!!!!.
For four quid, you don't ask questions about sweatshops or the like, you just get wearing and enjoy.
Of course,if Tesco ever decide to bring out a 'finest' jean, it'll really throw a spanner in the works. I've already noticed a certain snobbery factor. A couple loaded their trolley to the hilt with 'finest' items, looked right down their noses at me and the Mrs.just cause we had a basket load of value groceries.
A right old fashioned look it was too.
It was like the look I got at school when I wore my Delamare 'Tesco turn-ups' with the white stitching.0 -
The best thing to do is look at the shelf labels, they normally have a price per 100g (or similar) so it's easy to work out and quite often branded goods can be cheaper than Tesco own-brand.
Anyone noticed how expensive Tesco seems to be these days?? It seems no matter how little we put in our trolley the total is never under £400 -
The Sainsbury's value teabags don't seem to taste much different to their ordinary 'red label' bags, but cost about 1/3 of the price. A friend even asked what kind of tea it was I was giving him because it tasted so nice!0

however..... there are loads of tesco "value" foods which i prefer to the expensive stuff.
e.g. frozen cheese and tomatoe pizza
vanilla ice cream
bananna cereal bars (75p for 6!!!, and they have real bananna chips in them!!)
orange juice
yogarts
all biscuits
crisps (including the snack packs!)
need i go on!! mmm, im so hungry now i cant think of any more examples!! :P ;D0 -
Never a week goes by when I don't buy Tesco value tinned chopped tomatoes or value butter.
My 'into designer names' teenage daughter couldn't live without their mayonaise, which she swears to be better than M&S much more expensive options.
I think some things in value range are rubbish, so I try them once and think never again.........but others save me a fortune.
