try online, however before you do check where your nearest branch is if its too far try another bank when you need to pay cash in you will struggle and it could make a huge difference when it costs you 35 in charges

I rang the Co-op this morning to open their basic bank account, called the Cashminder.
Basically I rang 08457 212 212, which was on their web site and after waiting a minute or so to speak to a customer service advisor I just said I wanted to open a Cashminder account.
The CSA said he could do it all then and there for me and it would only take 10 minutes, so I gave him my details etc.
At the end he said my application would need to be "looked into", he didnt give any details but I assume its because i have a few defaults in my name, and said I was to ring back on Tuesday 8th July as it would take 2 working days for this.
I'm not too upset as I do know you can get one of these accounts even if you are bankrupt, so will ring back on Tuesday to see what happens. In the meantime I have had confirmation that NatWest have accepted my application for their Step account and have opened the account for me. I have gone ahead and tried for the Co-op account because I am thinking seriously of going bankrupt and I know the NatWest account would be closed if that happens.

I phoned them and done it over the phone, then if u are accepted u have to take relevent ID etc into the nearest branch.
(my branch is about 20 mins drive) but you can pay in and take out money over the post office counter xx:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
Ive got really bad credit and i managed to get one ok. Does take a couple of days (4 days for me) for them to check you out.
You can pay in to your account at a post office or co-op. I mainly got it for the electron so i can purchase items over the net / phone.0 -
Hi. I just applied in branch mid-week. They were very friendly & helpful & the positive is that you only get a debit card & so can't get into debt with it and there's always a Post Office available. I'm becoming more and more disabled & will need a debit card for when I can't walk & this seems perfect. My credit is very bad too after leaving my husband of 2 years due to domestic violence - naturally everything was in both of our names. I wouldn't be able to get credit at a recycling centre!:) I'll let you know what happens. have heard Step at Natwest is good. Best wishes

Hi Guys.
Further to my earlier post - I said I'd let you know how it went - I was reading through the literature I'd gotten from the Co-operative Bank & found a 24 hour service number (0845) & thought I'd call & see how my application for the Cashminder account with Electron debit card only, was doing. It was 6.47pm and I got a Human Being too!!!
She was very nice & after I gave her my application number, she told me that it had been approved yesterday.:j
I remember to when I'd gone in & try & open an account, the lady told me that if there weren't any problems, they would probably offer to upgrade my facilities.
I'd also applied online to NatWest for the Step account and they've sent me a letter and form to sign saying they had approved me in principle - that comes with a Solo card which might be more widely accepted.
These accounts mean that you can't get into more debt - no credit card or overdraft. So take heart guys, because if I can get one, you can too! My credit rating generally results in laughter :rotfl: (too long a story
), so anyone who needs a debit card only should apply.
Hope this helps guys. Much love. x"If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought." ~ by Peace Pilgrim.***'You just got Tiffed!'
