Wow ! I've got all that ahead of me in stereo - got twin girls, both still quite young. Hope they like Austria - there will be tears before bedtime if they dont !!

i used to love Austria as a skiing destination but i was young free and single and the nightlife was far superior to france--french skiing is more challenging and extensive--what kind of snow record has zell got and what altitude is it?-
-i have a daughter at home and a school full of the critters!!my wife owns a language school for kids(foreign ones) and i get brought in for conversation lessons!-you try chatting to them when your 47 lol

he sold a place in the uk in 2006 and just dumped it in gold at some record low price--he used to show me some american website that predicted with hard evidence the credit crash-my brother is a capt in shipping and doesnt really belong here anymore--he is a tax exile and just floats about avoiding governments!!---he pays his stamp in the uk and tax but he gets it all back if he stays away for most of the year--i made 19pc and he made 200pc in 4 years and my uk home has gone down by 14pc--i know i didnt win!!

Wow - you are really really unlucky if your house price has fallen 14% in four years, when London house prices have risen by 14% in the same period (according to Nationwide House Price calculator)

Living as a vagrant, with no home and not being able to come back to the UK for long periods just to benefit from a temporary spike in gold prices seems a bit excessive to me.

i am not sure about my house price fall-i was guessing from what i gauge on here--to me price rises and falls are irrelevant because i am not selling or looking to buy in the uk--prices float and as long as your dilligent when you move it makes no difference!
My brother has a gf and new born twins in spain and a small place for them -but is looking to buy a substantial home when they outgrow the place--with his money he comes back and forth to the uk for weekends to see people but prefers the climate away from the uk-as do i!-i try to get away as much as possible.

i would suggest buying a flat in a country like spain--it has lots of good skiing and house prices have dropped more than your exchange rate to the euro-

Thinking about it, but I will wait for the 1.30+ that is sure to come.

i used to ski in the sierra nevada in deep southern spain-the world championships have been held there a few times and it has a good snow record-plus it is in striking distance of the costa!-my brothers place is in barcelona and he does a lot of skiing just to the north of the city--barcelona is the ideal location for access and things to do-but more expensive.

i nearly bought a ski place in france many years ago but i was put off by the punative way the french governemnt taxed second homes--i dont know if they have now addressed this--it was many years ago -

I'm not aware of any punitive taxes on 2nd homes in France (anymore).

You pay council tax (taxe fonciere and taxe d'habitation) like everyone else, you pay CGT on resale like you do in the UK on 2nd homes - but there are a lot of legal costs when buying (about 5%-10% of sale value).

What do you think the chances of recovery are?
We want to buy a ski chalet (to let) in France. Obviously the weak Pound is going to reduce the lump sum we can put down.
I think the government is keeping the Pound weak to make exports cheaper to Eurozone and keep the UK money in the UK, while they get us out of the mess they got us in.
    What do you think?
    Will it recover to 1.40ish?
    When?

    Thanking you.

I think 1.20ish is where it should be and will be once the election is over and we have a new government.

The Greek government are looking to renegotiate their debt agreement with the EU and so watch this week, the £ may gain 1% or more and each time a poll shows a clear Tory lead, it'll jump again.

If buying in France you're probably looking at about 12-16 weeks before a deposit is required so perhaps use someone like HiFX or Caxton to fix a future exchange rate for you now so that you can get more for your £ when it comes to the deposit.

Where you looking at buying in France?
