DVD dual layer writer with lightscribe

Aldi put on sale yesterday a DVD dual layer reader/writer. Reads the usual DVD/CD's and writes to dual layers too. It is an external one, with Medion on the aluminium cover.

I bought one and took it apart so that the DVD drive can go into my PC - making it internal. When starting up my PC, the new hardware said it was a SONY DVD drive. Cool!

Checked the model number, can't see it being sold here (UK) but is separately sold in Chech republic.

The bonus of this one, it has lightscribe technology - ie if you have a DVD/CD that is compatible, you can burn your disc, turn it over and burn the label using the same laser. Sounds really cool, and comes with one DVD to test. I'm keeping that for something special.

don't know the price of the discs but had a quick look on the web:
https://www.rivierapublishing.co.uk have Verbatim Lightscribe (in tubs of 10) CD-R £3.20
https://www.dvd-r-direct.co.uk have DVD+R 8x: HP Branded 8x Lightscribe DVD+R Slim Line Jewel Cased (HP) 5 Pack @ £4.29 (86p per disc!)
Biggest debt, £48,000.
Lightbulb moment - Feb 08.
Current debt June 09 = £17,000, I have sold property to reduce that by so much. Now paying monthly.
Plan to be debt-free May 2012.:D

:eeek --- I just bought one from PCWorld for 59.99... that'll be going back tomorrow anyway since the darn thing only does DVD media (I guess I should have read the box more carefully).

There's an Aldi just down the road from me so I will pop into there tomorrow on the way back to PC World. Many thanks for this post!!!!

    Sony drives are AWFUL people.

Go for a Pioneer or something, and buy a USB enclosure seperately if you need an external drive, will cost you £40 anyway.
  • I agree….the Sony DVD writer in my last computer was rubbish compared to the Lite-on that it replaced.
The Sony was very slow at realising it had a disk in it & it made some very strange noises.

I’ll give Sony’s a wide berth in future!

Sony don't make their own drives any more - I think they might be rebadged LiteOn's.
