Bad DFW day yesterday

Hi all,
Just as I was feeling really on top of my finances i've had a major set back. On a roundabout yesterday an elderly man decided to plough straight into us, luckily me and DS are find but car doesn't look so good. He must have been around 90 had no idea what he was doing, and when he got out he said "that's the second one this week that's my fault". I felt sorry for him actually but really hope he realises he just shouldn't be driving anymore. Anyway, rang insurance company and garage will contact me, but have to pay excess of £475. Don't know yet whether car is a write off but it is possible. If the old man accepts full responsibility then i guess it's a case of paying excess out of savings, then scrimping big time to pay make sure cc is gone before 20th sept (when 0% runs out), and waiting the two months to get it back. However what if he changes his story, I can't afford that £475 not to be paid back?
Sorry just had to rant, I know we are really lucky not to have been injured, just frustrated and worried he'll change his story when telling the insurance people.

What an awful thing to happen. The main thing is you and DS were not hurt. If this is the second time this old guy has done it I'm sure he'll not change his story. He will find it hard getting insurance after these two accidents.DFW Nerd no: 149

You have my sympathies, sometimes life has a way of sneaking up on you and giving you a nasty wedgie from time to time.
Maybe the elderly gentlemen might see his conscience clear by paying for this seen as tho it was his fault?
I wouldnt want that ruining my karma if was him!0 -
Any witnesses! We had someone reverse into our car last week and just drive off. It must have happened overnight, probably someone drunk driving coming out a nearby pub. £400 excess and (technically) at fault claim on insurance. So OH's insurance will go up again next year. AAARRRGGGGHHHH.
Anyway, have virtually talked her into getting rid of this car, once repairs are done. We may go down to a one car family. I am going to volunteer to get buses to work and give her the lowly corsa. Could save nearly £450 all in, cost, insurance, Road tax, petrol, etc. Got to be done.
Anyway hope you don't have problems with claim. We did a couple of years ago, girl drove out a side street straight into us. She was looking the wrong way. She then tried to claim that we were speeding and cutting in and out of traffic. We resorted to using the damage to the car and stating that if that had been the case the damage would have been a lot more (we were only going 12 MPH at the time) and the area of impact would have been different.
Try to use physics to your advantage when it comes to the claim.Debt at worst: £33000
Debt now: £0, (Ok, a £650 overdraft)
£3000 Credit card (aiming to get this down with 0% card)0 -
And remember that you should get your excess back when his insurance co settle with yours, as its an uninsured loss. If he's accepting the blame, you may not even have to pay it at all, if they are paying for the repairs.
Another thing to remember is....the police will only come out & log the accident if someone is hurt.....so if anyone has an accident with kids in the car, call the police, as you don't know if they are injured (whiplash etc) especially with a baby.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

Hi all thanks for your support. Insurance company hasn't heard yet whether he's accepting fault, and garage aren't collecting car till Monday. DS is terrified of getting in the car as the side is all crushed in and he thinks it'll fall off. He's only just turned 4 and the car came straight towards his side so understandably it's frightened him badly.
Anyway today things got worse, to give you a bit of background, ex and I split whilst I was pregnant with DS, he took a year before he even accepted DS was his, since then has seen him each week. A few weeks ago he came into my house, went over to DS and said "Daddy is never coming back again" and that was that, he'd decided he couldn't be bothered anymore.
His visits (2pm onwards alternate sat or sun) allowed me to work, and or study, he also babysat in the evening so I could go out once a week. After he went i met up with him and asked if he could put maintenence payments up so that I could try and get childcare to help cover, and /or babysitter to go out. He offered an extra £20 a week (well a babysitter round here is £7 an hour) and said he couldn't afford any more. He now pays me £90 a week earns around £40000 plus cash in hand work + bonuses +company car + rental income (around and extra £800 a month) and now, get this today I find out he's brought a holiday house in Cyprus!!! I feel like he's rubbing our faces in it, how can he afford a holiday home when we are barely making ends meet? I don't want teh money for me, but feel my DS is been made a fool of. I just want DS to grow up experiencing things, football club, seeing other parts of the world etc and that all costs. I can't even use the CSA as they only take his basic into acocunt, and as its his business (worth a bomb i might add) last time he just dropped his wages and upped his bonuses and expenses. They won't take rental or his lifestyle into account, meanwhile I add up each peeny, and have to keep explaining to a 4 year old why his daddy won't come anymore, he thinks he must have been naughty and even said to me last week "Mummy what happens if you die, i'll have no mummy or daddy then"
Sorry to rant I know there isn't much you can do, just needed to get it out of my system, and need a boost to feel back in control of the finances again! Strangely you guys now know more than my mates I daren't tell people round here much about the situation as it'll get back to ex.

NSDH and I are splitting up and he refuses to pay me maintenance as he says I don't have any bills!! Yeah right so my own house doesn't ahve bills...PIG!! Sorry!! I just empathise with you so much...He owns his business and earns £40K plus per year meanwhile I'm part-time struggling on £14.5K, mum pays half my mortgage and bills as she has invested in my house with me (prior to breakup)...ooooooo and the CSA have had my information for over a month and still ahven't contacted husband.....the date of the claim is when they contact him!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrr
Anyway...look hugs to you and poo to him! And your DS won't miss him after al while, you are there for him day in day out and that's what counts and what he will remember!!2024 Challenges- Grocery Budget (January £0/£300)
