the OP's gone off-line now, maybe we'll never know

but I've just noticed she mentions them being packet, & the butter biscuits I know are usually sold singly in the baker's, so I think it'll be the ones you've posted about jackie

Many thanks for all your replies. These biscuits are very popular in the North East of Scotland and are sometimes known as "hard biscuits" or "hardies"!
Many years ago, I got a handwritten recipe but, of course, when I want it, I can't find it!
These biscuits are more savoury, sometimes spread with butter and a bit of cheese, but I like them with butter and syrup (and I wonder why my waistline is expanding!).
Butteries (or Rowies, as they're known in Aberdeen), are more bun-like, as are softies or baps.
If anyone does find the recipe, please post it, and likewise if I should come across it, I will do the same.

the yeasted ones in the link above are the Aberdeen rolls, they're sort of like a flat salty croissant, delicious :drool:Butterfly_Brain wrote: »I think you mean these if they have yeast in the ones you are looking for http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/scottish_recipes_Aberdeen_Butteries.htm

Abernethy biscuits are delicious too, but iirc are sweeter than the butter biscuits the OP's looking for
the butter biscuits that I thought of first must be a regional thing
I think I'll have to buy one next time I'm in town & post a pic 0 -

I've just dug up a Girl Guides cookery book from 1979
that used to be my mum's & that I'd forgotten I had, there's a recipe for 'Aberdeen Biscuits' in it, wonder if they'll turn out anything like the Butter Biscuits
here it is exactly as it's written in the book ...
8oz plain flour
8oz self-raising flour
3oz lard
3oz marg (I think this is where you'd use butter
)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
cold water to make a firm dough
mix dry ingredients rub in butter & lard. Mix in just enough water to make a stiff dough. Roll out thin & pr!ck all over. Bake 10-15 minutes in a moderate oven regulo 4.
Miss H Brace 17th Guide Coy
I think the instructions miss out the cutting into rounds & regulo 4 = Gas Mark 4 = 180C
PS there are all sorts of weird & wonderful recipes in the book, including one for gruel!0 -
Swan, you're a genius. I am sure this is the recipe - not a lot of sugar, sounds like it could be the one. Now, this means I will have to go and make it and will let you know how I get on.
I know the biscuits won't be to everyone's taste, but persevere - you'll love them!
Many, many thanks. :T
