What would you do?

August is a busy month for me- hen weekend in Preston this weekend (cost= minimal as I've already bought my train ticket + 2 out of the 3 of us won't be drinking), plus 2 BBQs on different weekends (cost= fairly cheap, petrol + the dessert that I'm providing) and a weekend in Brighton.

Now the weekend in Brighton will be with a load of colleagues from work, will involve lots of food and alcohol, shopping and a night out in Brighton. Plus train fare from London to Brighton. I will be lucky to keep costs below £100 but I reckon £150 would be a more realistic estimate.

I really really can't afford big nights out and would rather put the money into one of my credit cards. I'm also 3 months pregnant and (a) don't drink and (b) can't stay up past 10 these days anyway. The woman who is organising this weekend is going to be really upset if I pull out- and I'm her boss so it's going to be awkward. Several of the other girls will also be disappointed but I think if I used pregnancy rather than money as an excuse they might understand.

Sorry this has been so long-winded. What would you do???

  • Just tell her that something has cropped up and you can't make it that day!

Work nights out always end up costing more than you think. You put money into a bar 'kitty' and drink coke all night yet others put the same amount in and drink double brandy and then want everyone to add more cash when the kitty runs out. Spongers!

 now the reason I'm asking is because I live near Brighton and am trying to come up with ways of making it cheaper for you.

Do you know what your exact plans are?

Do you have to stay in Brighton?

Just don't go. Feign some kind of illness if necessary - extreme nausea should be believeable in your condition. You'll be so resentful if you spend that kind of money, it really isn't worth it.

Aw thanks Purpleprincess, but the plans are pretty set in stone. Train to Hove where we'll all stay in this woman's house, BBQ + drinking on Friday night, shopping in Brighton Saturday day + out on the town in the evening- and this lot can drink most people under the table...

I like Newleaf's idea of feigning pregnancy related illness- I can't believe that didn't occur to me before (I only had morning sickness for 2 weeks right at the beginning).

I love Brighton too Purpleprincess but I think I'd like it better as a day trip with a bag of chips as my only expense! That's so lovely of you to say I could have stayed- if I do go there at some point I'll let you know and we could meet up for a bag of chips! But I think I'm going to wrangle my way out of this particular weekend...
