Revamp my old wardrobes

I've been considering buying a new wardrobe fitment and then thought that to get one that is as good quality as the one I have now will cost a fortune. I got it from my well off brother. It is strong but has started to look a bit shabby. I think that it is made of strong MDF. It certainly isn't wood and for some reason I think it may have come from Ikea - it has lots of little shelves and drawers inside. It is white or should I say was white but does have a couple of chips in the fascia.
I expect I can get new knobs for the doors and drawers but will I be able to paint it and if so how?
I also have some good quality pine drawers and would like to get them to match the wardrobe fitment if possible. I think that just painting them in white gloss will probably look quite naff.
Any ideas?
