Really? im sure you can buy gold coated with white gold but normally white gold is white gold with alloys, you can pink gold too just not here. its the carat that gives it away. 24carat is teh most you can get
I think so, I could be wrong but i always thought and was told that white gold in essence is still normal gold underneath, but i also think yellow gold has some kind of treatment of coating to make it yellow too, maybe I'm just speaking rubbish now...

"Proper" white gold is an alloy of gold and a couple of other metals which has a grey/ yellowish colour. To make this look nicer they plate it with another metal that I wont bother trying to spell to make it look nice and shiny.

I have seen some very cheap white gold which was just plated yellow gold but this isnt what it is supposed to be.

Other than polishes/ laquors, I havent heard of anything being plated onto yellow gold to increase its colour

As mentioned by a previous poster try the jewellery quarter in Birmingham - there are loads of shops and they are all much cheaper than the high street. You could have a day out - go to the Bullring shopping - propose then go and pick a ring. Second hand is also good value too. Hubby bought my engagement ring from the jewellery quarter (pm me if you want details - it wasnt a shop - someone his dad knew) and also our wedding rings.

    Good luck.

I would say try inderpendant places. My uncle is a jeweller and he had a lovelly ring in SOR(sale or return) for a woman wnating to sell it. I bought it for £600 and just got it valued for £1275. I have ot get it insureed as I am taking it to canada with me in november.

Also remember it is not about the price you pay for it. It is about what it means between you two.
