Can someone get fake a mortgage in my name?

Ok about 2 weeks ago i was pickpocketed and lost my purse which had all my credit and debit cards in and also driving licence and NI card.

While i was speaking to my credit card company about it they were trying to sell me this credit check subscription which would help me to keep an eye on anything that is opened in my name. The lady was telling me someone could get a mortgage out in my name :( is that really possible to be done?

Now im really worried what people could be getting up to with my name.

Sorry i know this must be a silly question but no one has yet to answer my question.

Can someone get a mortgage out in my name (identity theft)?

Money Laundering/ID rules apply to advisers/lenders etc...so measures are in place to prevent as much as possible such crimes happening.

But if we didn't have criminals we wouldn't have identity theft!

    Yes.

The next question is "how likely is it to happen?" to which my answer is "exceptionally unlikely".

The next question is "should I pay to insure against it?" to which the answer is "these policies are usually a complete waste of money and don't stop the applications for credit being made".

    Don't lose sleep over it.

if they did take a mortgage out in your name... you would own a house. that has had a survey done, and someone paid your deposit...

whats your problem... tongue in cheek there, but mortgage fraud wouldn't be the height of my worries. Its more likely that someone could do it, who knows you and is close to you, and probably lives with you, so they can steal your post.

Trust me, my gf has first hand experience of it. However, she did get it removed eventually... it was her ex partner, most upsetting for her over the long term :(
