Moving abroad for a year

I finished as a student last year.

This year I have been working self employed and have earned approx £12,000 April 09 - April 10

In June I am moving to Canada for a year on a student visa. I will be working as self employed until then, earning about 2,500.

Not sure what sort of work I will be doing in Canada, but it will be their equivalent of PAYE.

What do I need to do and tell HMRC? I will have the money saved in a UK bank to pay the tax bill for 09-10. Is it just a case of doing the tax return online as normal from Canada? I'm guessing I can just switch my address back to my parents home address and any paperwork will get sent there.

But I'll need to stop paying Class 2 NIC. And as money is going to be tight in Canada, I wouldn't like to come across any random charges.

Anyone got any advice?

Yes, you will need to self assess for 09-10 by 31 Jan 2011 and pay your tax in the normal way. You will still be liable to UK tax on your Canadian earnings as you will not be out of the UK for a compelte tax year, but you will receive credit for Canadian tax paid.
