AA and RAC both very good, I have been member of both, and no compliants about either.
Go via Quidco (or topcashback) for some cashback. Quidco cashback amounts below:-
AA UK Breakdown Cashback rates
£50 for any policies of £100 and over
£42 for any policies between £76 and £99
£21 for policies up to £75
RAC Cashback rates
£20 for basic roadside/ basic roadside with nationwide recovery/ basic roadside with at home - breakdown cover
£40 for basic roadside with nationwide recovery, at home and onward travel - breakdown cover
£70 for a genuine new car insurance policy
£5 for a European bolt on
£30 for basic roadside with nationwide recovery and at home - breakdown cover0 -
AA covers both northern ireland and southern ireland, RAC covers only northern ireland (had this confirmed by an RAC guy at a shopping centre a few months ago). this is why I went with AA who I have found to be very good.0

RAC do cover Southern ireland as long as your address is in NI. However if you from England you are not covered for South! Hubby broke down last year in South and when I rang they said he wasn't covered. I asked so you mean I have been sold RAC under false pretense. I then asked to speak with Supervisor to which the young chap replied "There's no point they will tell you exact same thing". I in turn asked do you have a problem with putting me through? After abt 10 minutes (and this was @ 1am) he came back and replied "I am sorry madam you are covered for Southern Ireland as long as you reside in North, I have been working here for 7 yrs and this is the 1st time I knew abt this. In the end they came and towed car home and would have taken caravan too only I had driven down with other car to take caravan home. Normally I renew with whoever is cheapest as theres not much difference in service.0 -
This from the RAC websiteYour question
I live in Northern Ireland, will I be covered for recovery in the Republic of Ireland without taking European Cover?
Your answer
Customers who live in Northern Ireland can be recovered from the Republic of Ireland but only if they have Recovery cover.is recovery cover a higher level??
Edited to say recovery cover adds about £40 to the cost of a single person breakdown policy, comes in at £71.25 in total0 -
Thanks for your comments. Looks like RAC may be the way to go. Its about £17 more expensive for joint cover though!

As others have said make sure you use quidco. I got a year basic cover with RAC for £8 last month.0
