DFS are actually being quite reasonable over this.

I had the same problem in my old house with my sofas (couldn't get them into the living room as the corridor didn't have the turning space). I was told by Allders that it was my problem as it's your responsibility to ensure that you have enough space to get furniture in.

I ended up having the front window removed and the sofa was installed through the hole (had to repeat the process when we moved out too lol). It cost about £150, but it was worth it as the sofas had cost an arm and a leg. It may be an option if she's got her heart set on that sofa?

They have quite a large range, is there nothing else similar that she wants?

  • the only problem is that she lives in an upstairs flat and they could not manoevre in the front door due to space

In which case is any sofa going to fit do you think? You need to take a tape measure and go to the store with her I would say. Good luck......

  • she had a sofa in that has been there for about 20years so one will fit, but it seems she will have to pick a smaller one

My brother had the very same problem with a DFS sofa last year. They told him the same about having to choose another one instead. We did find one and were asked of he would like a dummy run to see if it fitted this time. (apparently they should have asked this when he ordered the first one and stated that he lived in a 3rd floor flat) They done the dummy run and it fitted so they ordered his new one.
When he said that he had gotten rid of his old suite (I had it in my home) they lent him a sofa for the weeks it took to get the new one made for him.
So really I think DFS are quite obliging.
Just make sure that your Gran asks for a dummy run this time and if she has got rid of the old suite then ask them for a loan setee until the one arrives.
Hope it all works out for her.

Agree with all the OPs DFS could if they wanted say tough but at least they are giving you an alternative. Although in reality how many people make exact measurements to see if the sofa will fit. None I bet, most take their chances including me.
  • i have mentioned about the dummy rum to my mum which she is going to tell my nan about, i suppose we will find out at weekend when she goes back to DFS to try and pick another

i will let you all know of the outcome after teh weekend

    thanks all

When we bought our DFS suite we had to sign a form saying it would definitely fit through our doors. They expressly stated it was our problem if it didn't.

If you buy from Sofasofa and it doesn't fit, they give you your money back without quibble. I have a 3 storey town house and when it didn't fit in through the staircase, it went back on the van and the money was back in my account within 2 days. And they'd brought it from Cardiff to Warwick!

We had to take our window out for sofas to get in - old terrace not good for negotiating sofas
