Import Duty (exchange item) Question

Good morning.
I bought a mnusical instrument from a retailier in the USA last year @ $1359usd. Delivery and duty were paid 11/11/09.
I am returning the item to the retailer in exchange for store credit, in which case I will not be paying for the exchange items I decide on, does this mean:
I will not be charged duty on the exchange items?
...or...
Will I be better advised to claim the duty back on the returned item?
Thanks
