Great post Jojo - and it goes to the heart of the issue. We need to consume LESS of whatever it is we choose to consume (with the possible exception of wine
:p). 0 -
In my family we have allergies and skin sensitivity. The regular products from stores are full of chemicals that do not agree with our bodies...God made everything for us to be able to take care of ourselves but we have depended on man to make our products. I now use all natural true green products with no harsh chemicals that can cause sickness and cancer down the road. Most products we use today will not affect us for some time. Our bodies absorb these chemicals over the years and the free radicals are what change the makeup of our cells. Go back to the natural way God intended and you eliminate that problem and feel 150% better knowing you are making a difference in your health. You are your own author on your health. I save money and help protect the environment each month I shop. many of my products are concentrated so we use less packaging and then the packaging is recyclable. No advertising so price hike in stores to pay the middle men. Need to know more visit this site....switchingstores.com/azure0

I can only applaud your aims and wish you well. I too try to avoid too many complex cleaners/etc at home (air fresheners? Bah humbug! Open the blooming window!).
But I also want to point out to those who think they are using chemical-free stuff, that every single thing of this planet is made of chemicals! Chemicals are the building blocks of everything. Even us. Chemicals=bad is too simplistic.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Regarding Menstrual Cups, there are lots of different brands available, not just the Mooncup.
Everybody on this site seems to recommend the Mooncup, but I couldn't get on with it at all and it was a complete waste of £20 to me.
The Lunette is a far superior design IMO and also has much greater capacity. Also a better shape for anyone who has a low cervix (again IMO). If I'd had to persevere with a Mooncup I think I'd have given up and gone back to tampons.
If you're thinking of getting a menstrual cup, do a bit of research first. Live Journal has a great menstrual cup community forum with invaluable information and advice and reviews.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. I just thought I'd update with where I am at with all of this.
I feel very alone, I feel like a rabbit in the headlights, feel that i'm being conned by ethical companies as their products are so expensive. I really am being torn by what is supposed to be healthier to use and the price.
All that being said I'm trying to make my own way through all of this (and whoever it was that mentioned anxiety... I had the paramedics out last Monday for chest pains - all in all we think we think I had a panic attack as ecg was fine - i'm no way saying it was because of all of this but it goes to show that these little things we think of in our lives add up and make themselves known without warning!)
I see it as having an education, I need to learn for myself what 'ingredients' I agree with. I do feel it is up to me and i'm some what annoyed that it has to be up to me to sift through this but I guess that is just the way of our world.
I have decided to concentrate on our clothes washing. I am using soap nuts (no idea if they're any better for us but they struck a chord with me and I FEEL they're better)
I was taking an interest in making my own soap but the whole caustic soda idea is so alien, frightening and does not sit right with what I am trying to do.
I'm cleaning with 'natural' products from Tesco own brand but they still smell very synthetic, infact I just don't like them, don't feel they're any better but it will have to do for now.
I am removing my make up with coconut oil and it's working fine... just hope it's ok for my eyes.
My next thing is sanitary wear. I am still using bleached products and feel so scared in doing so but i'm trapped because of cost. unbleached cotton is more expensive plus delivery costs as I can't get them instore, and to be honest I would like to try the mooncup or that sort of idea. Again, everything is down to money.
I just feel I could enjoy this whole process if I had the money to spend on trying these new ideas but I don't. I am also feeling so damn used and abused because of the cost of natural products.
I think finding the products I like and agree with and stick to them, buy in bulk, from one place. I think I need to lessen the amount of products I use but not sure what will clean the floor and the bath that will not have me weezing.
As you can see from this mismatched message I am still very confused, still annoyed and still worried.0 -
Aw, you poor thing! That must have been very frightening having to get the paramedics out. I hope you're ok now.
I'm one of the soapnut fans
- I do find them nice and gentle. Some people boil them up to make shampoo/liquid soap stuff out of them. It's not sudsy, but does have a mild detergent action.
Sounds like you're plodding through the minefield of green living carefully - I know how you feel, it really is quite difficult sometimes.
I know it's not for everyone, but would you consider making your own pads from old towels, flannels or tshirts etc? I don't like pads but I'm toying with this idea for night time. A folded piece of cloth seems to stay in place if you wear big Bridget Jones type knickers!:D It seems like a comfy, green and frugal option .... just need to get myself organised!
Take care and good luck!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I'm sure that your regular household products aren't doing anything bad to you. While our lives are increasingly filled with more products and synthetic materials, we do still enjoy some of the longest life spans in history and the best health. In general, I'd attribute this to cleaner food, water and houses/workplaces. Modern synthetic materials, from plastics to detergents have been a big part of making our environments healthier. They help us package things and clean them.
I'm enjoying the health benefits, but not getting excessive either. You don't need piles of strong cleaning products to live in a clean house. Washing up liquid is safe enough to clean your plates and will clean just about everything else in your house too. You can add a few specialist products such as washing powder and furniture polish and have everything you need to clean the average house in a few packets.0 -
I am no way connected to these books but may i recommed to the OP the following: Imperfectly Natural Home and Imperfectly Natural Woman. I'm sure you can get them free from your local library. The author does use some expensive alternatives but also gives frugal alternatives as well. But more importantly it gives information on why certain products in everyday living aren't so good and the OP can devise a list of what's most important to change now and to what she can budget for. HTH.

Can i ask a question of those that use moon cups? I've been toying with the idea of a mooncup but there is something that cant get my head around.
They are made of plastic, and plastic gives off toxins so isnt it just as bad to be using moon cups as throw away tampons, washable san pads or sponges seem to me to be the better option,0
