Emergency tax - help

Hello everyone,

I started a job in September 2009 (first job since february 2009). I was put onto Emergency Tax for my September & October wage. Got a tax refund in November, then, in December was put onto Emergency Tax again. My boss called the accountant who said that I had always been on Emergency Tax, I had never been given a refund, becaus I had to sign some form (sorry cant remember the name of it, but I had signed the form). So my employer got me to sign another form. I was advised it would be all sorted for my January wage.

In January I got my wages, my tax code was correct (something like 645L or something like that), PLUS I got another tax rebate. Now bearing in mind I got a tax rebate in November (it says this on my wage slip), so I got all that tax back and more!!!! I questioned it with my boss because I thought it was wrong, as I had been given too much money, so he called the accountant who told me that my wages were correct and not to worry about it!

Feburary my wage slip came though fine, no problems at all, then this month, March, Im back on Emergency tax again, only this time, it doesnt just say BR, it says BR M1.

Im really confused with this, and im a bit annoyed that it hasnt been sorted, So my boss has called the accountant again, but they havent got back to him as yet.

Can anyone shed any light on this, why is it happening, and more importantly what can I do to make sure the accountant has sorted it. Im now really worred that the accountant has made a right total mess of my tax, and I will have to pay back money. Im only part time (17 hours per week, @ £8.00 p/h) so its not as if i can afford to have a lot of my money taken from me.

Any advice anyone?

For each month can you advise the gross you were paid and the tax that was either deducted or refunded showing which it was.
Did you have any taxable income before starting work in September, eg unemployment benefit?
I assume that the form you signed was a P46, which box did you select A, B, or C?

By the way BR code is not the emergency code it is the code used if emergency tax cannot be used, for example if the correct tax forms are not recieved, or you have another source of taxable income.

Hello, yes I think it was aP46, but im sorry I cant remember which box I ticked. Prior to me starting work in September 2010 I had no taxable income at all. I do remember on the form there was a question about that being my first job since 6.4.09.

Here is my gross salary and tax :-

    Sept £176.00 tax deducted £35.20

    Oct £696.00 tax deducted £139.20

    Nov £591.00 tax refund £161.75

    Dec £624.00 tax deducted £124.80

    Jan £596.00 tax refund £404.20

    Feb £564.00 tax deducted £nil

    Mar £604.00 tax deducted £120.80

I hope this is what your looking for.

well your total earnings were 3851
and you were REFUNDED tax of 145.95

    which basically makes no sense

but be aware you owe the HMRC the 145 so make sure you don't spend it all.

Does your payslip have columns for total gross to date and total tax paid to date. They may be phrased slightly different but on your first payslip they should be the same as your first gross and tax figures but then increase. If you could give these we can see if someone elses figures have been added in to yours.

basically you shouldn't have paid any tax but neither should you have received any refunds.

    Thanks Clapton.

i thought I would have owed some sort of tax, but im not sure how this all works. if I owe HMRC money then I owe them money, I will pay them, but I just want this sorted with the accountant, so I can then know that my wages will be correct at the end of the month, and not have to worry about how much money is going to get taken off me.

This does not seem to agree with the monthly figures, can you give the gross to date and tax to date from each payslip.
