Good Friday Veggie Meal or Buffet help please

Hi all - my sister-in-law and her family have just announced that they will be popping in to see us on their way to catch the ferry to France on Friday, and could they possibly have supper with us?
This is not a problem per se AT ALL except that this Friday is Good Friday and we - though not particularly holy - do not eat meat on Good Friday. I have a number of veggie dishes which would be fine if it were just for adults, but my 9-year-old nephew is also coming and I can`t seem to think of a thing to offer him except cheese pizza...
I don`t particularly want to cook something just for him (and then find he doesn`t like it anyway :rotfl:) so I thought I might do picky bits to give everyone more of a choice. Or I could do a sit-down meal - don`t really mind, so long as there is something on offer which is a) delicious (I have my reputation to uphold here!!!!) and b) not too challenging for a (brought up in Scotland, favourite food is sausages and he`s only 9) child to eat. Before they said they were coming, I was going to cook a puff pastry pie filled with spinach, feta, halloumi and parmesan. I still may cook this because it`s yummy, but I can`t see spinach appealing to Jean-Luc.
So have any of you gourmet veggies got any super-brillo recipes either for a buffet-type meal or for a really dinner-party-type main course that will also appeal to kids? All suggestions very gratefully received...:T

Can you not do a veggie sausage plait or sausage rolls? Although if his name is Jean-Luc(gorgeous BTW) he will probably have more exotic tastes in food than Jim Bob or Timmy, and may enjoy what you are having, we are veggie, and my 10 yr old Ds would eat that. He'd also eat the sausagerolls too, mind you!

What about a nice veggie curry and make the sauce a little milder than usual? You can pad it out with rice and naan? Yummy!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790

That sounds promising - what's the plait - is it just puff pastry plaited over sausage "meat"?
What is great with Jean-Luc is that he will jabber away in French to us one minute and then tell us about his latest Lego creation in broadest Scots the next. However, his tastes do not run to the exotic except in the sense that he is as carnivorous as every other Frenchman you're likely to meet. And yes, his Scottish heritage is of the deep-fried Mars bars variety (I do realise that I'm quoting every stereotype to a Glaswegian, so many apologies, but I'm afraid that though you may be more adventurous, he, unfortunately, isn't!). He is of the 9-year-old poke this strange food suspiciously what is it I don't like it variety. So veggie sausage plait may well be an option! Thank you!0 -
Aye, basically, that's what it is. The best veggie sausagemeat mix is either from Asda and is dried in a bag for 77p or if you're near Holland and Barrett, they sell Sosmix, which is the same stuff, but the manufacturer;s brand name. You mix it with water and an egg (not essential) I like to add some cilli powder and salt and pepper ( it definitely needs the salt), which they will be fine with if they are Scottish as our favourite "square sausages" are spicy and warm. Then just make up your plait or Sausagerolls. My kids' non veggie friends love them. You can buy ready made sausage rolls, but they're not anywhere near as good, and you'll have the pastry in anyway. I also finely grate carrot and sometimes some onion through mine too for extra veg (always carrot, onion depends on the mood) HTH

I'm not in the least bit holy (but i do try to be, rather half-heartedly), but i do refrain from eating meat on all Fridays throughout the year. It is a form of self-discipline, and is one of the few that I can stick to.
Anyway, I think that there must be hundreds of meals you could make but i think i would probably go with the buffet idea when entertaining guests. Smallish spinach (or other veg of your preference) and feta cheese (or any other cheese you have in) quiche, Quorn chunks marinated and cooked and then put on skewers to make kebabs, vegetable samosas, spring rolls, sosmix/vegetarian sausage rolls, slices of nut roast (delicious hot or cold), Meatloaf made with TVP or the contents of a beanfeast sachet (sachets of artificial mince available in supermarkets), cheese scones or twists/straws, filo pastry parcels filled with roasted vegetables (put a nice diping sauce nearby), mini home made pizzas. Thanks for all your suggestions, chaps. I made my spinach and cheese pie, which was scrummy, and my daughter said, can`t we just have macaroni cheese for us kids? So I was making that when Jean-Luc came in the kitchen, saw what I was doing and said, yum, pasta! Can I just have pasta with butter on?
So that`s what he had. I let him choose his own pasta shapes.
Last time I worry about what to give bloomin` kids...
Oh, and bought the sausage mix and some other mixes from Asda, so I`ll give those a go. Thanks for the tip, Jackie.0
