On the off chance, Tax Issues.....

Hiya,
hope on the off chance someone can give me some advice please.
I have an accountant but im sure he only works one day a week as i can never get hold of him!

Ok here's the issues.
Worked full-time for a company until May 2007. Then from May 2007-Jan 2009 was self employed until business closed. The wage i took from the business in the 1st year was under the taxing threshold and i didnt pay any tax, the 2nd year i took no wage from the business and got a refund.
My accountant sorted all the above for the 2 years while the business was going.

i got another job from June 2009-Oct 2009 which resulted in redundancy.
I did not pay any tax with this job as i didn't earn enough, but when the company went into administration my final pay etc was payed by National Insurance Fund and they Taxed me on the pay. I have not worked since this job ended, and as i was self employed did not get JSA.
Can i reclaim this tax? And if so how do i go about it?

Now this years Tax returns, i filed my self assessment online in Nov, and it said i was entitled to a £10 refund which i recieved 1 week after filing.
I have now had a letter from my accountant saying he has filed my tax return too and i am entitled to a 3,400 rebate for 2007/8???
It said it would be an ammendment to the tax return filed, and after it had been submitted it i would recieve a cheque for the amount owed.

Does it matter that the Tax return was filed by myself and my accountant? I thought as the business had finished and ends were tied up i would do tax returns myself this year!

I am a bit confused over the whole issue, and my accountant is now on a 2 week holiday, so any advice will be gladly recieved.......

Its really impossible to advise without knowing why your accountant filed a different self assessment to the one you filed. I think the simplest way to find the answer is to ring your tax office and ask them.
As far as the currect years refund is concerned, you just download form P50 from https://www.hmrc.gov.uk and send it with your P45 to your tax office.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the fast reply!

My P45 doesnt show the final amount as the company went into administration and the P45 i got from them shows no tax paid.
I do have copies of the payments made and tax paid by the National Insurance fund, they are like payslips.
Do i just copy these and send with the form?

As for the accountant i think he just assumed he was filing my tax return this year and did so!
I did it as i recieved my tax return thro the post and as i had hardly any earnings in the tax year it was easy for me to do online.
How do i know which tax office to call?
Thanks for your time and advice
  • Surely your accountant sent something to you to approve before filing?

Yes, send whatever paperwork you have with your repayment claim.
Your tax office should be shown on your statements or other correspondence received from HMRC.

Yes he did on the 23rd Feb!

He apologised for delay but had been waiting for additional info form HMRC that he had now recieved. He was aware that the returns have already been filed for 2009, Therefore these would be added as ammendments and the associated funds issued shortly after submission.

Your guess is as good as mine, and he is now on holiday!!

    Thanks Fengirl,

will send off the form today for the repayment claim.
I think the Tax return rebate was maybe something to do with the cessation of the business, as the Tax refund was an offset to 2007/8, well thats what the paperwork said.
Have been in touch with tax office and they are as confused as me!
Now im more confused, and they say.............

TAX ISNT MEANT TO BE TAXING!!!!!!!!
