    Mendelssohn wrote the incidental music, Op. 61, for A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1842, 16 years after he wrote the Overture. (overture whan he was 17)

    Phew! that confirms again what i thought 17, i knew they would get tricky! On one site it mentioned 16 so hence i checked quiet a few places xx

    The question does say overture tho then Wiki says...

    The A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, Op. 21, originally written as an independent piece 16 years earlier, was incorporated into the Op. 61 incidental music as its overture

    Felix Mendelssohn's score for William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is probably the most famous incidental music ever written (with Beethoven's music for Goethe's Egmont a close second). Mendelssohn composed the miraculous overture as a 17-year-old,
