re the bank hols that would be in your contract if you can carry them over, if your wanting to use your leave then yes you should say so.

That is more or less exactly what I wrote (with names changed obviously). There is no need to write any more than 2-3 sentences.

paulwf's letter is correct. It should be factual and straight to the point. Your employer will work out what is due to you in un-taken holiday and other benefits when they reply. You should examine it closely and, if you don't agree, then is the time to challenge it. Leave it to them to come to you with the terms. If they don't explain what is due to you, then verbally ask them to do so.

If you want to give them an explanation as to why you are leaving, it is probably best to talk to your manager to explain rather than discuss it in written form. You will presumably be asking for a reference for another employer, so don't risk getting a negative on that by making written complaints about the way you have been treated at work, should that be the reason for you leaving.

If you are leaving on friendly terms with the employer, you can soften the brusque way that the letter reads by personally handing it to your manager and talking about the reasons at that time.

Resignation letters are seldom lengthy, unless the employee is leaving under a cloud or under duress, in which case it is probably understandable to have a rant and rave because you are unlikely to get a good reference anyway.

the only reason to refer to the amount of leave you have left is if you have a preference for either taking it as leave to bring forward your finish date, or to ask for it to be paid after your finish date.

However, working out what YOU think you're entitled to is always a good plan ...

    thank you all for this.

regarding the leave, i would like to take my leave as part of my notice period so would i be better sayng this in the letter?

also, i am unsure of how to work out my leave entitlement.

our year runs from 1st of jan to 31st of december. we get 25 days plus 11 bank holidays however as i am part -time i am entitled to 60 % of this which works out at 21.6 days.

so am i entitled to the full 21.6 days or am i only entitled to the amount of days that is proportionate to how many weeks i will have worked at the end of my notice period? (around 17/18 weeks)

Definitely only what you will have accrued at the point of leaving. Sorry!
