homemade caddy liners

We have a council food collection for whichwe are provided a kitchen scrap caddy. I hate putting scraps directly into the cady and want to line it . Liners are. expensive and newspaper just doesn't fit right. Does anyone know a way to make liners, maybe a clever way to cut and fold newspaper. We have to use paper, so carrier bags are out.
Thanks

Hi minimooch, I would do it the way I line a cake tin - cut a long strip of newspaper (several thicknesses, probably) the width of the bottom and lay it down one side, across the bottom and up the opposite side. Do the same with the other pair of sides, giving a double thickness on the bottom

our council provides bio degradable bags to go inside the caddy , may be worth asking if yours odes the same .
dont use my caddy for food wastes though , have chickens and compost bin for waste , caddy makes a fine peg basket though0 -
Sadly our council don't provide liners . Was they did

Mine is the same as yours minimooch - little caddy and the council don't provide liners and tell you that you can't buy the bio-degradable ones either.
We tend to save a cardboard box from something and squash it down to fit the caddy as we can put cardboard into the 'stinky' binwhoever said laughter was the best medicine has clearly never tasted wine

I work for a refuse and recycling company and we've been told that we shouldn't use the bio-degradable bags as they're not suitable for 'industrial' composting, just for home composting. Ofcourse where some green waste is recycled it may be different.
However before I got my own compost bin for my garden I used to line my caddy with a carrier bag and then just emptied the contents into my green waste sack (or green waste wheelie bin if you have one) and then threw the carrier bag away.0 -
I've been using a couple of paper towels in the bottom - value brand - not very MSE but the only way to keep the smelly gunk off the bottom.
Once it's been emptied I fill the bin with washing up water, let it soak, swish the sides with the old floor mop & let it drain upside down to dry.
(btw, the council here use an ordinary bin lorry & set a time limit on the route so the men have difficulty in getting the caddy bins properly empty while running after the moving vehicle...no wonder the caddies stay mucky!)I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions
kimmee - I didnt know that about the compostable bags.
I think I have a solution, it sounds more complicated thatn it is, so here goes
The instructions here, http://www.videojug.com/webvideo/how-to-make-an-origami-garbage-box , to make a small box. Use this idea but with newspaper,
Take 4 sheets of a freebee tabloid newspaper and put them on top of each other. Now follow the instructiosn in the video, BUT leave out the first "fold in half". Imagine that you have 2 sheets of a larger newspaper folded in half (we need 2 sheets for strenghth). Proceed from the 2nd step, bend the corners into the middle bit, remebering you are using 2 sheets as 1 if that makes sence.
Its not as strong a box, because the first "fold" is not actually joined, but its just for lining and seems strong enough. It makes a tallish liner that fits fairly well. Its not quite as wide as my caddy, but not far off, and a bit of practise you can knock em out in seconds. Going to teach origami-mad 6 year old DD to do it. she fills the house with little paper boxes as it is.
Thanks for all the thoughts everyone.0
