It's peoples own money, it provides them comfort.

You are not saying they are being tricked into services which they didn't ask for, or not being provided with services. (Even though you think you are.)

They paid for someone to tell them these things, and that's what they got.

There are many, many companies making money out of misery that have nothing to do with psychics.

I agree, I have a friend who visits a psychic and she has recently lost someone very close to her. She finds comfort from what the psychic tells her, I personally don't believe in it, but I think its a good thing if it helps people with their loss etc. It is their money to choose how they spend it, I suppose it could be viewed in a similar way to counselling?

Some people find comfort from them, and reputable ones won't charge too much, so it's a case of swings and roundabouts.
Everyone has their own intiution, I guess with some it's more in-tune or they just like to exploit people - if it's the second, then karma will bite them in the !!!! big time!

I went to see a psychic in my younger days and she scared the hell out of me. She said "I'm walking around your flat" and described it exactly. She also said that she was running a bath but couldn't fill it properly. The flat had a ridiculously small hot water tank. She asked if I worked with food as she could smell food cooking. When I said no she said "You will be soon" I was offered a job waitressing that weekend.

Once a strange man came up to me in a night club and said "Be very careful what you do over the next 24 hours" I asked him why and he said that he'd gotten a message from John to tell me this. My mates and I laughed ourselves silly at this but when I got home my then boyfriend put me in hospital for being out so late. When I went back to the club the man was there again so I asked him about the message and he said that he was psychic.

I know that people are going to try and explain this away but, no, no one knew about the stupidly small water tank and the man in the club couldn't have known me or my ex.

My point is that not all psychics are charlatans but I bet the phone line ones are.

Edit: I never found out who John was.

    That's very interesting.

It's a bit freaky but also quite comforting to think that the dead can look out for you :)
  • Here's a link to James Randi's $1 million challenge. So far no-one has even passed the preliminary test. My thanks to BillScarab for finding the link and posting it a year ago.

If they're psychic and using their talents to help people for money, wouldn't they be able to help more people with all that money in their back pocket?
Seems not. I guess they're just con artists.

It is regulated - sort of - under the Fraudulent Mediums Act.
unfortunately, its rather difficult to enforce. If they did enforce it rigorously, think of all the stockbrokers they would have to arrest!!! because its so difficult to prove that someone is actually trying to decieve rather than genuinely believes that what they are telling you is the truth.
my advice - dont go anywhere near those psychic phone lines - find a reputable medium through the Spiritualist Church or word of mouth.
personally I just ask one of my twin grand-daughters - they are both psychic!
  • Why isn't there tougher regulation on sites like this one:

    psychic-forum.com

Exploiting people, making money from people's misery and lapping it up in luxury whilst those they prey on get nothing except either a large phone bill or a pack of lies read off a script or 'nice, fluffy, comfort' words to make you go back and believe what they tell you.

It's just truly sickening seeing places liks this and they are worse than anything else right now when times are tough they are sickeningly cashing in and taking advantage of it.

Is there no regulatory authority in this country to stop this apalling behaviour???
Sorry caught the thanks button by mistake.

As for psychics living in the lap of luxury -

You pay £1.50 for the call

The psychic depending on who they are working for will receive a min of 9p per min up to appros 45p max.

If you have been cheated out of your money the fraudulen mediums act that was updated a couple of years ago would be worth reading as you can now have the psychic prosecuted. but all the calls are recorded by law.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)
    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

Lived in the same area, perhaps? Youngish woman not likely to be living in palace, probably with rubbish hot water system? Could smell cooking from fryer on her hair, then when told she wasn't working in chip shop, covered herself in the assumption that a young woman living in a small flat would be likely to take waitressing jobs

Wouldn't it have been more use for him to say 'your boyfriend is going to beat the living $rap out of you tonight, so don't ever go back home?

I know that people are going to try and explain this away but, no, no one knew about the stupidly small water tank and the man in the club couldn't have known me or my ex.

Why couldn't he have known your ex? Were you in a different country?

More accurately, not all charlatans are psychics.

Edit: I never found out who John was.

That's because he just picked on the most common man's name in the UK for most of the latter half of the 20th Century

The first woman was good at cold reading, that's all, with probably a dose of local knowledge.

Whilst people have said that psychics can provide comfort for people who are feeling low, I do think that most of them take advantage of people when they are feeling vulnerable, otherwise why would they charge? Why would they not share their 'special gift' for free? I really do hate to think of people parting with lots of money because they are grieving and understandably are searching for comfort or hoping to communicate with a loved one.

I think everyone who pays for psychic readings should watch Derren Brown explaining how cold reading works so they can at least see for themselves how it's done.
