Don't think I'm going to make it

  • Hey mountain,

Please don't get too down about debts and dates - I do this all the time but a couple more months really doesn't make a huge difference in the long run.

Re. getting down about debts - someone gave me a really good piece of advice yesterday - count your blessings. Like you, I've heard that phrase thousands of time but it really hit home in the context of our conversation - remember to be thankful for what you DO have and put things into perspective.

I also wanted to say that I'm sorry I haven't been in touch so much recently - I have no excuse other than laziness but I really do care about how you are getting on.

Sounds like you are doing brilliantly! Keep in touch.

  • but thanks for your kind words.

I know that I've come along way - if someone had told me that I would have paid off over £2000 in one year off one card alone I would have laughed - and I know at the moment this is a set back but I really do think I'm coming to the edge of the cliff....not literally I hasten to add.

I've spent the last 24 hours trying to work out how I can juggle what little money we have. In the last couple of days I've broken every golden rule....spent on cards where I have got special balance transfers, you know the score.

As you know we were hoping to be in a position to pay off our mortgage soon due to an inheritance but even that has been put on hold and it is perfectly realistic to assume that we may not know receive it for years....I know chickens and hatching spring to mind!

Scottish, don't worry I know how busy we all are.......and I do count my blessings ....at least I have plenty of those (pity the cc companies don't accept blessings, lol!)

Hiccups, just hiccups. Happen to all of us. You have done well so far, so don't fret too much. At least you are aware and doing all that you can.

When I look at my debt total, I don't think, wow, I'm nearly a thrid through my highest, I think, jesus how am I ever going to clear this?

I read on here somewhere a tip that someone had put where they split their debts into £100's, so instead of thinking I have £10,000 to pay off, I could think of it as 100 x £100, now £100 is an awful lot, but I am paying out about £400 + per month trying to clear it all, so that number will come down quite quickly.

Focus on how well you've done, and not on how far you have to go, your DFD will come sooner than you think, just don't be too hard on yourself.

That was me. I find it a lot easier to look at small numbers and count them down, seems like your amking progress quicker. So instead of seeing say 10k, you see 100 x £100 payments. When you have paid £100 off, it goes down to 99. It seems to make it easier for me, but thats just me. It's like the phsycological feeling of seeing £6980 instead of seeing £7070.

You are doing really well so far but maybe you need to set yourself smaller more sensible targets for now, as you acheive each one you will get a sense of achievement, then start aiming a little higher and increase your targets as you become confident that you can do it.
