SD card corrupted and won't format

Help please. I transferred a load of photos from my desktop to an sd card for my neighbour to look at. However, the files came up as gobbledegook on her laptop, and the same on my pc. I decided to format the card, but my pc won't let me. It keeps saying to close any operations that are using the card and then to try again. I have restarted the pc and immediately tried to format, but to no avail.
Is there a way to format this card or should I bin it? I would like to save it if poss as it is a 16Gb card, but would any other files loaded on it in the future get corrupted as well - files I could not afford to use?
Any suggestions?

it wasnt bought from ebay was it?

90% of cards on there are fake (ie. 2gb cards programmed to show 16gb etc)

I can't remember where I got it from, but it wasn't from ebay. I had to put nearly 11 Gb on it, which was why I used that card for my neighbour.

I don't care about losing what is on it, as I have all the pictures on my hard drive and an external hard drive, so they are safe.

    You don't state your O/S, but I'll assume Win7

    - get this : http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm

    - install it, and use it .. it supports removable disk formats .. make sure you pick the 16Gb card !

    - Win7 doesn't like it and may give you a ' cant do it ' - or - ' whatever ' message but just go ahead and format the SD with swissknife.

    - when you've finished you may have to reboot before windows will let you see it but after the re-boot it will be forever ok !

What poster 2 said might still stand. You might see that you can take, say, 1GB worth of pictures fine (i.e. the GENUINE card capacity), before corruption starts happening.
