Is it illegal not to fill out a P85?

I just wondered if it was illegal not to tell the tax office you are moving abroad? Just I might move abroad to work for a while to see if I like it and don't want to say I am for sure? So wondered if it was a legal requirement to tell them? Or if it's just something they advise you to do?

No you dont have to fill out a P85, its not illegal. If your looking for a refund of tax, then you will need to complete a P85.

I was told by my local HMRC that despite it saying it was about reclaiming tax, it's actually for letting them know we've moved.

I have a query- Section 3 says "will you have any accomodation in the UK" and section 4 is about other property that you rent out. So if we're letting our home do we say no to section 3 and detail the letting in section 4?

Yes. They want to make sure that they get the tax on the rent.
