Avast 5 - Installed but won't run

Avast 4.8 told I'd come to the end of my licence, fine went to the site new 12month free licence and downloaded Avast 5. All installed fine.
Sunday thechnophobe hubby tells remembers to tell me that he went to use the lappy but the "spinny 'A' thing" had a red cross through it so he turned it off.
Had a look. Yep, it's not working. Tried the fix button - nothing. Uninstalled, reinstalled rebooted. Nothing. Installed but not working.
Had a read of the avast support pages, there are other people with the same issue but no definative answer, just keep trying.
Uninstalled, again, used ccleaner as avast advise, reinstalled, reboot, installed but not working.

Uninstalled, ran ccleaner again and reinstalled avast 4.8, reboot. Working fine
apart from wanting to update to new version.
Any clues?

did you try using their own removal tool and then reinstalling ??
