Bathroom Scales

Last night I was going to throw out my fancy electronic scales as they no longer work properly (I put a heavy box on top of them and left it there for a couple of months, which has upset the balance mechanism......) Then I thought "I can probably fix this using some OS know-how". So, has anyone got any bright ideas? I've tried shaking it and replacing the battery but this hasn't made any difference. I can't undo the plastic outer casing to examine the mechanics as the case is moulded. What now?
