Cake Tasted of Diesel ... Why?

I bought a slice of cake today. It was carrot cake and looked gorgeous. Within the sponge bit there were a couple of tiny dark spots, which it was suggested by my companion might be dates. Then I bit into it. It was weird. But I had another bit, it tasted of diesel, or petrol. So I gave a bit to my companion and they screwed up their face.
I didn't eat any more.
What cooking ingredient could possibly taste of diesel/petrol?

Sounds odd. It could have been stored in a plastic tub maybe? Sometimes when they're new they can smell really strongly and taint the food inside. Or possibly if it had nuts in, the nuts were rancid? This can taste vile. Or maybe it had been made with rancid oil, or really cheap margarine? Again, the rancid oil can taste horrible and sometimes the cheap cooking spreads can taste seriously like petrol.0

you should have taken it back and told them, i did this with a lemonade ice lolly a few years ago bit into it thinking it was going to taste lovely and it tasted of pure salt. we took it back to the shop where we all got free icecreams and the lollys were all removed from the freezer, dont know what ever came of it though as we moved a few days later:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0
