Ideas for jobs that are not office based?

Can anyone please suggest jobs that do not involve being in an office full time and don't need many years' training? I wouldn't mind being in an office a few days a week, but I'm sick of office politics all day every day.

I wouldn't like to be on my feet all day either, so, shop/restaurant work is not for me.

This is a genuine post and, as such, I would welcome constructive opinions. Thanks in advance.

  • How about cleaning? I do a part-time cleaning job for the local authority and it's a key job which means I can let myself in and out of the building at a time to suit me. There's no-one to tell me what to do and I just get on with it. They do leave moany notes sometimes but other than that it's great.

Thanks for your post. Not too sure I can clean on a full time basis though. How much does it pay?
  • Sorry, I thought you meant you would work some days in an office and other days somewhere else. I don't do it full time either, just evenings. I can't remember the exact rate but it's about £7 something with holiday pay included. As a supplementary income it's very useful but if you want to do something full time I can quite understand you don't want to do cleaning all day. I don't think I'd want to either :)

National trust are recruiting at the moment for seasonal staff. That's all pretty much non office based.

What sort of experience/qualifications do you have and what work is available in your area?

My daughter is a home care assistant. She has no qualifications in this area at the moment but has just been offered the opportunity to do her NVQ level 2. She works for an agency, so shifts vary in length and times of day, although she has regular clients now, so it's not as varied as it was. Her clients range from a baby who was about a week old he became a client, to disabled school children, to adults of all ages.

She's really enjoying it and there are often adverts in the local press for carers.

You could also check your council website for jobs such as sports centre attendant and park ranger assistant.

Working the tills in a supermarket means that you would be sitting for most of the time.

You could also try small companies for office work - some will only have one or two members of office staff in total.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I should have made it clear in my first post that I want to have a career change altogether. But I guess that, with the current state of the economy, it might be wiser to keep my current job and get an evening/weekend job in a new career to see if I like it.

I need to investigate options in care work and supermarket tills. I like sales but, with no experience, I don't think I can cope with commission only. I'd be interested to know the best ways to get an entry level sales job.

I have experience in office work, client care, events organising, finance and teaching/tutoring. What makes it very difficult to make a decision is that none of the options I've thought of so far would pay the mortgage/bills, which is the bottom line. Like many other people, I just can't afford to take the plunge at the moment.

Try looking at job websites and see if there's anything there which interests you and then you can look into the person specification to see what you fit.
NHS jobs is a good place to look for non-office based jobs and also can give you ideas about office jobs which you may find interesting as office jobs can be interesting providing you are in the right role for you. Also local council websites can be useful for allsorts of different roles.
You could also try looking for jobs in the third sector
which may appeal to you - event organising, teaching, office work and client care are all useful for this area of work.

    Some ideas:
Driver either cars/vans or even buses/trucks/trains
Driving instructor (or even motorcycle instructor if you have licence and experience)
Ambulance driver (Patient transport or A/E << can be entry level)
    Fire Service ?
Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig
