I sent a selection of photographs of dresses to my friends and most have come back saying this is most like me (whatever that is supposed to mean?! hee hee!)

at £89 it doesn't seem bad and I have a £20% off voucher when paying through paypal taking it down to £71.20

I was considering having the dress ivory and the embroidery done in red. Has anyone had any experience of this seller or dresses from china sold in this way? I'll only be wearing it on the day.

As for the bridemaids dresses I'm hoping to purchase something from a high street store (monsoon, bhs or similar) in a style that is okay to wear again for other occasions.

    Hi

Sorry no experience of buying dresses, but that one is absolutely beautiful, I know your going for ivory is it the deep red or crimson that your having as the constrast colour.

A lot of people get the dresses from high street, that way as you say it can be wore again.

A friend of mine had a dress from China, (I presume ebay), and she was over the moon with it.

Congratulations, and good luck with it all xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • I haven't decided which red yet. Probably crimson, it comes with the bag too, which I could imagine using again on nights out.

I like the crimson better, look gorgeous, xx

  • i also prefer crimson and i gotta say i love the back of this dress! (all of its beautiful of course but espec the back!)
  • I'm getting conflicting messages on the quality lots of people who bought them say those from china can be just as good. But my mum said she was chatting to a dressmaker who said they are really poor quality and feel naff and cannot be altered. I so love that dress but can't bear the 'i told you so' if she's right! The feedback on ebay there sellers are generally great. Aaargh what to do!

The thing about them not being able to be altered is because the chinese really scrimp on material, so if the dress needs adjusting OUT, it will be almost impossible as the seems are so tight.

My sister bought her dress from China and it was lovely - good quality and a really pretty dress (which she then sold at a profit after the wedding!!).

My one tip to you if you are planning to go down the china dress route is to measure properly. Get someone else to do your measurements for you.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

Look, as a dressmaker and having 1st hand experience with some offshore dresses, you pay your money you take the chance.
This dress you are looking at is a Duchess satin which is very weighty. In my honest and professional opinion, you simply cannot get a dress of this quality for the price it's at. I may be wrong as they buy fabrics by the roll which can be 100's of meters long so get it cheap.
Many ladies are really pleased with their gowns but in my job I see all the faults.
As long as the dress is fit for wear and can be worn for a few hours and that's all that a lady is interested then go ahead. If you want to keep your dress as a keepsake then you may want to reconsider.
One thing to consider is the re sale if that is the route you choose to take. With these types of gowns, the re sale is practically non existant.
There are many many things to consider and I don't really like to comment on this, but just felt an honest opinion would be appreciated.
  • Thank you linda. I do just need honest opinions and it is appreciated. I only want t wear it on the day. Afterwards i'll probably donate it to the prom dress sale for school kids we have up here. I'll have more of a think. Better go and do my uni presentation now!

martine, if you can why dont you buy the chinese dress with extra material so it can be altered here if your happy with it
if your not happy could you just buy another one? i know it sounds silly but £70 for a wedding dress is very cheap you should be expecting to pay over £200 for one
the seller also has a returns policy so you could send it back to them
I am not bossy I just have better ideas:p
  • I feel if i didn't like it i would return it and buy another. My colleague (who does lots of alterations to our nhs uniforms so we actually look like females in scrubs not girly men in baggy pajamas) has suggested we measure big to ease altering if required.
