What would you consider an acceptable distance to travel?

Hi all,

I have been offered a job in another county (is for the council). The only drawback for me than remaining within my current county is the distance to work.

It is 35 miles but takes about an hour plus in the morning would be pretty heavy with traffic. My job is pretty tiring so I am still weighing up if a long drive would be the death of me each day. I have travelled further in the past and remember being very tired.

So I was just wondering really what time/distances people communte.

Thank you

My last job i used to travel only 5 mins down the road, but i'd say an hour there and an hour back would be ok.

It takes me about 45 minites to get to work 2 buses, but traveling home friday nights it takes over an hour, which i dont mind, as I dont work weekends.

An hour travel to work is personally what i consider okay. However when it gets towards hour+half to travel there, its gets too long- thats 15hrs a week travelling.

However if the pay is really good, im sure it be worth a longer journey for more money:D

What people see as the norm / excessive to travel to work varies according to the area / level of job.

many people in the south east who work in london see 1.5 hrs as ok, but where I work, people see 1 hour as quite high. I'd say that time is really the determining factor, not distance.

From the outskirts of manchester it can take 30-40 mins at time to travel 7-10 miles into manchester centre, but outside peak times (arriving for 7.30) you can get to leeds, 40 miles away in 10-15 mins more.

My personal view is that 1 hour is ok if it's a job you want to be doing.

    I think the question is:

How much are you getting paid to travel that far?

If you were paid £35k or above to travel for 1 hour. This is fine.
If you were paid £45k or above to travel for 1 and hour. This is fine.

If you were paid £16k to travel for 1 hour. This is ridiculous as the petrol or transport costs will knock at least £3k-£5k off your salary. Easily.

1 hour is rather ok to travel but not the best. It will eventually get to you but if the money is good. This will balance out quite fine.

I have worked in the past 50 miles distant from where I live and yet I continued to commute sometimes by car but often by train.

Jobcentres will recommend that you look within a 50 mile radius for a job so 35 isnt that bad.

A good point, if we take the standard mileage allowance of 40p a mile and assumed a 5 day week and 6 weeks of holiday a year we are looking at a traveling cost of £6,440.
  • It's time and how you travel you have to consider, not distance. If you can get the train (and get a seat) almost door to door then you can spend that time having breakfast, reading the paper, listening to music or even studying.

If you have to drive, then you can't.
