Gutted

Just wanted a moan.
My OH managed to get a job after 2 years. Worked like a horse for this last 2 weeks having being begged to go and work there by the owner of a business as he (the owner) was desperate. Got his first wage last Friday...we were jumping up and down with happiness...making plans for the future.
This a******* used my OH's good name in the area to make mega bucks over a very busy holiday weekend. Then when OH turned up for work yesterday, was told the business was closing and he (and all the other staff) were paid off!
I am so mad I could hire a hit man if I had the money. How do I support a man who feels he has been used and spat out yet again?
I came home from work last night to find him crying. I want to cry myself but I have to go to work and leave him. I am so worried that this might be the final straw as far as he's concerned. There's only so much a man can take.
The new job he had was working as a chef...not what he wanted to do and not helping his arthritis but he would have taken anything. As we weren't seeing much of each other because of the split shifts and long hours, I even invested £30 taking the Basic Food Handling Certicate so I could work in the kitchen with him on a Saturday! Would have paid minimum wage and meant I was working a 50 hr week but it would have been worth it.
Oh well, at least I have a job and now have an extra qualification to go with my degree.;)

What a nasty piece of work, however, what it shows is that your OH has useable skills. I'm a bit confused by what your OH does, is he a Chef? but does he no longer wish to continue this line of work? or is he something else entirely.

This may affect his self-esteem and self-confidence so I think it is important to get him out into another job either paid or voluntary as quickly as possible to show him that he and his skills can be used for benefit, not just by greedy nasty, evil people.

You say he's not worked in 2 years is this through choice (or at least medical choice as you mention he has arthritiis) or because he can't find something he can do? What has he been doing for the last 2 years?

Sorry for all the questions, but big hugs to you both, you both deserve it, get some fighting spirit back in your OH. Remember he's the better man out of the two of them and remember what goes around comes around.

    Fingers and toes crossed

    Hi Murtle.
He trained in catering but the wages are so bad that for 27 yrs until 2 yrs ago he worked in a factory, doing a bit of cooking on the side. He was made redundant 2 yrs ago and at 53, with bad arthritis(it was a v physical job) decided to go self employed. He worked incredibly hard for 2 yrs but had to pull out because of a catalogue of disasters with inept Council officials etc. Made no money at all.
So thats where we are today.
Cooking he enjoys but the wages are dire.
    Off to work I go!
So when he was offered this

Yes I can appreciate wages being poor in catering, I studied Hospitality Management for 4 years!!! It's shocking that in this country it's classed as a second rate career, yet in other countries it's classed as the important service industry and people who work in it are respected!! Such a difference! However, a few things that my old class mates did to earn some money, I don't know if these are possible.1. Burger van2. Dinner parties, they cooked either at home or at the hosts home3. Cakes4. Sandwich van in business parksit sounds like he may have tried some of these already, what kind of area do you live in?I'll take my Mr. Fixit hat off as I know you just wanted to moan, but I hate people being hurt by others. Hugsx

My OHs been having lots of problems in the work dept recently, and it really is so disheartening. this week he got passed over for a job as he was overqualified ( ridiculous really, but there you are) and the second one he was offered wouldnt wait till after our holiday.

we are now giving up trying for a week, and when we come back from our DFW hol, we will hit the ground running.

IS there a specific "disability" person at your local job centre, might be worth finding out.

Also are there any grounds to sue the council for his losses?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

    Thanks everybody for the support.
Just got back from my half day...going via my elderly Mum's to do a bit of cleaning. Nothing like scrubbing the sink to get rid of a lot of aggression.
OH has been to Job Centre who say he can get "fast tracked" for JSA as he's only been working for 2 weeks.

Murtle...we live in a remote rural area which we love but it makes jobs a bit difficult. I drive 60 miles return a day but work (generally) long shifts so I can condense my working week into 3/4 days to cut down on petrol.
Cooking dinner parties at home means you have to have kitchen approved by the Environmental Health Officer and as we have 3 moggies thats not an option. But he is looking into your idea of coking dinner parties at other people's homes. At least he could combine that with working during the week if something comes up.

Lynzpower...as he hadn't even got as far as a contract its not worth pursuing the little rat. And OH is too proud to go down the disability line yet. He'll probably die with his boots on...on the way out of the door to work.

    Something will turn up!
    Thanks again:T

We had a similar situation quite a few years ago. My husband gave up his well paid job in a factory because it was damaging his health. He tried working as an HGV1 driver but there was only temp work at the time and it was very badly paid. Then we were over the moon because he got a job as a dustman and the money was reasonable. However he only lasted one day at this because his bad knee gave out. The work was too heavy for him. He took a government training course doing plumbing which you could do in those days but afterwards no one would give him a job and there was no work in the area. He went self employed cleaning chimneys and doing the odd bit of plumbing. There were plenty of tears in those days. Eventually we had to move to this area where there was plenty of work and he managed to get a job. Now hes earning really good money and is one of the top plumbers on site but I know exactly how you feel.
