Q re notice period and sick pay (DWP)

Ok i have a couple of questions i hope someone can help with. Ive worked for the dwp (jobcentre plus) since 2nd Nov 09. I have been off sick for 3 weeks with stress (a combination of work and problems at home). Now i have decided to hand in my notice and wondered if anyone knows the notice period i am required to give. I think it is one month but i might be wrong? Also...will i be paid for my time off sick? I know DWP workers have paid sick leave but is this effective from day 1 of employment?
Thanks in advance xx

You should speak to your line manger.0

Unless your contract requires more you only have to give one week's notice as you have worked there for less than a year.
However, it is seldom in your best interest to resign when sick. You may not be eligible for JSA straight away. Talk to your doctor before doing anything you may later regret.
Obviously with only a short period of employment your employer will not allow you to be off sick for too long before they start to consider your long term prospects. However, particularly if you are getting company sick pay it is far better (from a financial point of view) to let them make the moves.
You accrue paid holiday even when off sick so you can use this as part of your notice period.
Most employers will let you resign with less notice if you are off sick, if you choose to do so, as it saves them money!0 -
if you are going to leave and have to sign on will you be signing on at that jobcentre? don't think that would really help you get better...0

Thanks everyone! Yes i am a new starter (started nov 09). I have a lot going on at home and am a single parent to a 2 year old. I initially applied for the post on a part time basis but at the time of recruitment there was only full time. I jumped in and took it.....but now i feel working full time is just too much. I rarely see my son, my family/friends, and i feel really cut off from everything. I thought it would be easy, but instead its made me so low i just cant face going at the minute. Its not only this, as i say i have a few issues at home too. As for JSA i would be claiming income support and have taken advice that i could claim this straight away. I considered keeping putting in a sick line and waiting for them to make the move, but at the moment im pretty sure i cant face going back, and dont want to decieve anyone. My doctor has started me on medication and agrees that full tiem work with my current situation is one of the main causes for the way im feeling....i just needed advice on what im entitled to really. I guess i'll get a pay this month, and when i see my doctor on Monday i'll ask for a sick line to cover my notice period and hand it in. I hate having to do that but i dont see any other way at the minute
Epatolles, yes it is my local jobcentre, but there is another only a mile or 2 away so id consider asking to be based there.0
