Hi,
Can pls someone advise me on what i should do or what my rights are?
Basically, i'd bought a house in scotland in 2006. Sold the same property about 6 months down the line to someone whom i knew.
however, last year time i started getting letters from Glasgow city council demanding council tax for the year 2009 - 2010.
much to my surprise, i kind of ignored the letters( know i shouldnt have). the letters then turned into solicitors letters acting on behalf of the glasgow council DEMANDING so much money.
i then plucked up the courage and phoned the solicitors. told them i no longer had the property, and they asked me to get in touch with the council. to which i did.
turns out, my name is still on the land registry for some reason. and the chap who i sold it too has scarpered apparently, some time ago. and the house was due to get reposessed. Now, i knew the guy who i sold the house to, but even i cant get hold of him or his details.
and almost eight months on, the house still has no one in there, no sign of anything. the locks havent been changed etc.....
what has happened?...more importantly, what should i do?:(

When you owned the property was it mortgaged and I am presuming you sold ie You received a sum of money on completion transferred from yr solicitor to yr bank a/c0

yes it was mortgaged. but because id only had the property for six months hardly made any money on it. but yes their was a small amount from my solicitor that got transferred into my a/c, id made from selling the property, but that was almost wiped out after the solicitors cost.
problem is i dont hold the a/c in that bank anymore, so i cant even access information on which solicitor it was as it was done through a mortgage broker who arranged the solicitor for me. and even the mortgage broker has become untraceable!
does that make sense?:(:(:(0 -

Stay calm. Tell Glasgow City Council to get knotted. They are a bunch of incompetent buffoons, they tried to chase me for 3 years unpaid council tax on a property I had once rented even though I had moved out of city several years before they said I was living there. After several failed attempts trying to make the chimps in their offices understand this fairly basic concept, I just gave up and told them to take me to court if they actually thought they had a leg to stand on. Judge would have laughed them out of court. Never heard from them again.poppy100

It was pointless trying to reason with them. I provided them with loads of proof that I had moved out of the property long before they say I did. They already had a copy of my letter to them saying when I would be moving out and asking for a part-refund for the council tax I had already paid for the year. I gave them original copies of my council tax bills from my new council in England covering the period they said I was still living in Glasgow. I also provided utility bills and a letter from my employer confirming when I had started working for them. None of it worked, the drones in the office kept on parroting "well it's still your name on the system, you are responsible for paying it unless you can find the person who moved in after you to take over responsibility". Which is blatantly untrue, it's not my job to hunt down the landlord or the next tenant for them.lol! thanks that has given me a bit cofidence.
Still makes me furious after all these years. Idiots. :mad:poppy100
