All my accounts are at an address I don't live at! Am I breaking any laws??

Hope I am in the right place...

OK so I am getting to grips with my debts and how this world of being finacially literate works and am pretty happy with things but something just recently occured to me:

I recently applied for and got a 0% santander card and an alliance and leceister current account. However, I used my parents address in order to apply for them (which is a good 300 miles from where I actually live and work).

Why did I do this?: About 5 years ago I went abroad to live and changed everything to thier address as putting a forign address would just have been a nightmare. Since coming back to the UK a year and a half ago I have had 3 addresses and it is possible that I will change addresses again in the next 6 months to a year. I just cant be bothered changing my address every time I move and so have just left everything at thier address! All my bank accounts, credit cards, loans are at thier address. I am even on the electoral register there.

The only people who have my current address is my employer, the doctor and Boots and Tesco! Oh and the guy I live with, who is also my landlord.

However, is this ilegal? (I am not doing for ilegal purposes and my parents dont mind at all that my mail goes to them etc) If it is not ilegal, is it going to cause me any problems in the future?

Thanks for your help :T(in advance)...:rotfl:

I suppose it is in a way, due to most forms having a tick box to ask if all the above information is true.

It also possible it could be having a negative impact on that address

I would use your new address and contact them via email or letter if and when you move next, not too much hassle in exchange for peace of mind ;)

It won't affect their address. Credit is tied to name and address, if either do not match no record is logged, meaning an address cannot be blacklisted. However for high fraud areas in london some postcodes are "blacklisted"

I do not believe it is illegal, although it maybe for a driving license. DVLA can fine you for £1000. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_4022088

Oh no could it have a negative impact? I thought debt was held against a person not an address...? My debt actually isnt bad as such I just dont like it but have not missed payments or anything (Actually I was the perfect credit card customer for a while by always having money on my card but never missing a minimum payment!)

I suppose my other reason (2nd to my laziness) is wanting a vote in the general election and have had experience at trying to get on to the electoral role in a new place and it not being too quick! But putting my parents address at risk is far worse than some undesirable party getting into power!

    Thank god for that.

Hmmm never thought about the DVLA, I dont have a car but I do use my driving license to get into clubs when they kindly think I am 12 years younger than I am! The only time I actually drive is when I am visiting my parents (the address that is on the card) and use my mums car.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and change all the addresses, and get on the electoral role where I am living and just change it all again if I do move in 6 months...

electoral role will help with your credit score.

I do not believe having your other documents goto your parents is illegal. I know it can be a pain but with royal mail redirect you can usually keep track if you move.

  • I do the same and I wouldn't worry. I always thought that changing your address a lot could look suspicious? I got sick of forgetting to change address for stuff so just moved it all back to my parents and now get it redirected. I'm not on the electoral roll now though as it's only one person living there so obviously she wanted to get single person discount.

I really wouldn't worry, just don't tell too many people!
