Standard Life endowment - is it worth trying to make a claim still?

Options
Moved into present house 17th May 1988, paid first instalment on Standard Life endowment 20th April 1988. Cashed in previous endowment from Coventry BS on solicitors advice, who's mortgage manager sold us S.Life endowment. Told that S.Life would pay out full £41,000 mortgage plus £19,000 lump sum.
Hubs wrote to solicitors using Martin's Moneytips letter 25th July 2005 but they replied all their files were destroyed in accordance with archiving policy. Goes on to mention The Law Society having powers as of 29th April 1988. Won't be able to pursue a civil claim through the courts as we're 'out of time' and 'statute barred' by law.
Latest forecast for our endowment is estimated at £22,000 on maturity. Luckily (depends on how you look at it) hubs was made redundanct 4 1/2 years ago and we paid the mortgage off.
But where does that leave us? Would really appreciate some help please, even if it's bad news, at least I've tried.
Many thanks
Lia :)
